Yes I was also told if it's real deep to do that stuff in layers let it dry sand it down apply another layer so on and so forth

I cannot tell if this is the POR 15 or if it is the 3M stuff I'm talking about

POR is a paint. Apply it to any remaining rust and bare metal. Then build your surface back up with the panel bond.

I think this method will be cheap and effective. Not sure for how long.

If it's my bed, I'm still cutting it all out and welding in new metal.

Well didn’t hurt to try but they told me at corporate....outside of the corrosion warranty....your problem. I refuse to act like an ass, yell at people, and generally be a jerk to try and get corporate to do this on their dime for me, so guess I’ll just be welding in some patches from the top and keeping an eye out for a new bed eventually

I'm right there with you but I hope eventually there's enough of us that complain about the same situation over and over that they will eventually replace some of these. To this day I still believe they are still putting in these drop-in Bedliners they need to stop that right now and get a spray in liner right away

Also, they advised if I have a shop do any work, or you end up replacing the bed keep all your receipts and records, just in case in the future this does indeed become a recall or service campaign (doubtful) then we could get reimbursed under that program.

I did call my local toyota dealer the inside bed is made up of 4 parts front, right, left, and bottom, our issue is still a part of the sides The right and left side panels for my truck are 700 each if I had the money thats the way I would go. Because they are just put in with the panel glue like the rest of the teuck.

I saw on another board someone put a LineX in when the truck was new. Liner started to bubble up, took it back for warranty and was informed a hole was rusted through from the bottom up.

Yep I think thats right their is not really any way to get away from this. If you look at this pic you can see where I grinded it the top on the edges are solid and everything in between is just rust .Cutting it all out is just about the only way to fix it for sure .20190122_093817.jpg

Mnorris1206 asked me in another thread that prompted me to stop by this thread. I'm another member that's had spray in rhino liner since new and there's some bubbles in the coating in my bed in 4 areas near the bolts but nothing showing through rust. Stepping on them they're a little spongy so I'm guessing they look just like the rest of these pics and I'll be jacking up the bed to cut and weld new panels in. Maybe in the summer. I would plan on coating the crossmembers in chassis saver paint while it's all apart.

The frame is solid on my truck too, it was coated at ziebart when new and hasn't been sprayed under the recall yet, will do that in the spring too. Maybe after I fix the bed and try to get them to coat up there too.

My 2010 CrewMax has the same exact issue, but I have it on all 4 corners. What is the name of the shop that you used? They did an excellent job.

Drop in liners are the worst. First thing I did to my truck was take the liner out and get linex sprayed in. Luckily I got it before the surface rust turned into serious rust.

The rust that has happend to my bed was not from the drop in liner. In fact a few guys with spray liners have had the same rust in the same exact spots. It all starts from under the truck where you cant even see. The support braces trapwater between it and the bed.

I have Krown rust proofing applied yearly in an attempt to prevent that sort of rust.

I really hope for you 3rd gen owners Toyota has got there sh** together on this because it's a nightmare in my eyes. Trying to keep a nice truck nice in the salt states is almost impossible as it is. We dont need this design flaw on top of it.

What years was this an issue with Tundras? I have a 2008 Crewmax that is developing a large hole in the bed and it's been covered with an A.R.E. cap the entire time. Do they sell replacement panels that can be welded in?

My prior ride was a '00 Tundra that I took delivery of in November of '99. The bed had a spray in liner, but rusted out the same way... from the bottom up, at the cross members... It was an extremely common problem on the first gen's. It doesn't sound like they fixed it on the 2nd. I hope they have it under control now.

I have a 2014 Tundra. Rusted through already in the four corners. I had a spray in bed liner that hid the rust. It also looks like Toyota also tried spraying on a sealant to prevent crud from getting into the crossmembers. This sealant actually hold moisture, and it hid the rust until it was too late. Already talked to my dealer and they blatantly told me no over the phone.
I’ve purchased or leased 6 new Toyota’s in the last 9 years. This will be my last one unless Toyota steps up to fix this issue.

This happened on your 2014? Ouch! Man I love Tundras and it pains me to say this but I agree. If this issue isn't resolved in the newer models, I won't be buying another Tundra.

I agree the rust is starting under, but I believe the drop in bedliners is speeding the process up. My 2011 now looks like this. I put in a Toyota plastic bedliner right when I bought it brand new in 2010.

Its not the bed liner, its from constant sand blasting from the tires, the stock wheel well liners cover less than a thong.

My 2018 came with a bed liner when I bought it new, didn't have a choice. I yanked it not long after I got it and had a premium Line-X sprayed in. Nobody wanted it so after a year or so I cut it up and took it to the recycler. I'm in California so no salt on the roads (thank goodness).
