Woke up at 5am in a Saturday morning to piss. Looked out the window to see my son wasn’t home (in my wife’s 4RUNNER) when he was supposed to be home by 2am.

Long story short, he ran it through a ditch and now it looks like this:

    B87BF819-2227-4D59-99DD-4C83818CD2D8.jpg 7227BCFB-85D6-444F-969E-4C6C667EF526.jpg

We were already debating getting her a new one. Probably a TRD Pro...this basically cinched it.

Now we wait to find out the damage and if it’s totaled or not (2016 Limited with ~50k mileage).

Please pray for my son as he may need it to make it through the weekend in one piece with me and my wife.

I was going to ask if he was okay. He must be, if you're talking about trying to keep your foot out of his 5th point of contact.

The bright side is he wasn't driving a little Prius and seriously hurt, although he probably wishes he was.

Does his full story sound plausible?

Single vehicle accident overnight, not really the best time to try off-roading. Was he tired, distracted (phone), and/or impaired? Road conditions?

    Yes he’s ok.

    Story is only mildly plausible.

Not sure we’ll get the whole story, but life’s about to get a little harder for a 21 yr old living with his parents.

That’s the sad thing, we have 7 vehicles! He was in the wife’s because only one 3 of us can drive the Boxster and one of the other cars is in the shop.

The most important thing is that your son is ok.

    Check. Glad to hear it.

The second most important thing is that he never ever does something that stupid again. I know my dad would have made me either pay for the damage, work it off if I wasn't employed, or if the vehicle was totalled I'd be paying the insurance deductible and the increase in the insurance rate for a very long time. I'd never be allowed behind the wheel of one of dad's vehicles again either. I know this because he threatened me with it the first time I took his vehicle out on my own (ironically, a 4runner as well LOL).

    #2... He's ok

    Nothing else REALLY matters.

He'll never forget this, and neither will you... When it could have been a MUCH worse night for you if there a phone call to come down and ID your son.

We all get distracted when driving. Leave the door open to talk about what really happened, and allow him the chance and the courage to tell the truth. Just be fortunate that you have the chance to have that conversation.

...and then go pick out a new BA PRO!

Yeah. With 4 sons (age 18-23), we’ve had our fair share of stupid decisions and close calls.

He will definitely be paying the deductible and lose rights to drive any of our vehicles other than the beaters. He also wrecked my wife’s Tacoma on his last day of high school (backed into a Mini Cooper in the school parking lot).

We’ve never spared the rod with them, but we are understanding that mistakes happen to all of us. Just have to man up, accept the consequences, and learn from your mistakes.

Got home a little while ago. Just had a good (calm) talk with my son. Hopefully he’ll learn from this.

On another note. That T4RPro is awesome! I like the interior so much better than my Tundra TRD Pro. You’d think a package like TRD Pro would come with similar items even across models. The 4Runner doesn’t have all that chrome and silver inside; it’s black and even a little carbon look mixed in. It has a leather steering wheel and heated seats. Even has the JBL! Of course I’ve not heard good things about the Tundra JBL, but I think it’s pretty good on the 4Runner and you’d think Toyota would put their best foot forward (or at least the same foot) on all the Pro models.

Anyway, the wife is sold. She’s ok giving up her smart key, dual climate zones, and vented seats for the Pro. Did I miss anything she’s losing from a Limited?

Now it’s a waiting game to see what insurance says next week before we can start shopping in earnest.

Update: Met with the body shop this morning. We're sitting at $13,000 in damage. This assumes some items are repairable (like the wheel), and I don't believe they are all repairable. Also, because the build date on the 2016 TR4 is more than 2 years old (May 2016), USAA is requiring the shop to use used and/or aftermarket parts for the repair; I can pay the difference for OEM if I want. They will also not be doing a full repaint; just the entire driver's side, front and rear bumpers, and spot work on the hood. I find it hard to believe they'll be able to perfectly match and blend that blue flaked metallic black paint. And we're looking at 30 days to do the repair!

I understand this is all part of my contract paint techniques are vastly improved over years past and after market is just as good in most cases, doesn't make it any easier to swallow.

With the supplemental claim of $2,400 for the ceramic pro and clear bra vinyl. We're looking at 55% of the KBB value. That's before the body shop opens it up and finds any hidden damage that they can't currently see, or they have to replace parts they thought were repairable. Add to that the loss in value claim (which based on my past experience is peanuts compared to the real value lost) and cost of a rental car for 30+ days. I just feel like they should call it a total loss and let us move on.

Whether they do agree to a total loss, or I have to bend over and let them repair it, we will be getting a new T4R in early 2019. Cars are never the same after the front end takes a hit like that.

Side note, the wife is driving a Nissan Armada rental. I used to have the older body style Armada and loved it. She absolutely hates the one she has. We may have to call Enterprise back and ask for something different.
