Not gonna lie, thought about it as I was typing it…but notice I didn’t say “forklift fork-proof”. Seems the freight company stabbed the roof panel box with a fork. I believe a new panel is being ordered by RSI.

Hey everyone! New member here. Mine came in today (ordered about six months ago) and the boxes were in fairly good shape. But the side panels are very warped and bent. The interior box the side panels came in had no issues but when I pulled them out lots of weird bends. Oddly enough both the left and right side had similar bend patterns.

example of one of the bends shown below. Working with the dealer to see if RSI can just send new sides out as the front and back and top seem good.

has anyone fixed bends like this and had a successful seal?

Hey, welcome to the party Matt! Just got home from work and haven’t had a chance to reply back to your PM yet…but it looks like someone else had the same problems and concern as you have, and they were able to straighten it with a 2x4 and a mallet without consequence. See this post on page 2 Good luck and post up a picture or two when you get it mounted!

Jeez, what a disappointment to wait six months just to receive damaged crap.

That does suck, hope your RLD made landfall in good shape! Sounds like you’ve waited almost 7 months by the time you’ll see it.

Thanks! I’m gonna try that but am waiting on them to get back to me first. I don’t want to wait another couple months to get replacements in. They told me yesterday not to try any fixes yet as it might void them replacing anything. Hopefully hear back today then will start rubber-mallet-and-2x4-ing

Update: I’ve been instructed to repackage the cap and will be given instructions to ship it back. No idea how long it will take to get another one…if I’d known it would be 6+ months to get it in the first place, it would arrive bent and I’d be on the hook to repackage and prepare it for shipment to just wait again for another one that is hopefully not bent…I would not have spent $4k.

A lot of people have had better experiences here but just a story of warning if you are considering this.

Quick update: shipped the SmartCap back for refund. Not waiting for another.

Ordered an ARE CX HD instead. Arrives early March.

The locks suck in winter. Have to keep a heat gun in the truck to be able to open them. Stupid design.

    the roof vent leaks

the thing condenses like crazy inside with a few dogs and temp changes. Like a tropical rain forest.

    I still love it though.

Sorry to hear about your experience. That is why we offer free installation and try not to ship them. It gives us more quality control on the parts. It also helps if you buy from a dealer who works hard for you, we have many tundra 5.5' caps coming in the coming weeks. We sometimes have to pay extra freight but its worth it to have happy customers.

I wish I lived closer to y’all would have definitely gone with you guys as an installer. I did order your front runner load bars and kit to go on the top of the SmartCap. Those won’t work on the ARE so if anyone is interested in them send me a DM.

Just an update for any who are watching this thread. RSI just warned me of a incoming price increase set for JAN 1 2022. All backorders placed now will remain at the current price. 6.5 ft caps will be available in the next couple weeks with more 5.5 caps mid feb.

I love my cap but... the locks don't like moisture. Heavy rain caused a bit of corrosion, which made them much harder to get the key in and turn. Solved this by cleaning with WD-40 and shooting silicon lube in a couple of days later after the WD-40 had evaporated. What I have not found a solution for is freezing weather and snow. The lower housing for the lock is indented and water pools there. When it freezes, the entire mechanism is a block, and south of pouring hot water over it, is unusable. Any ideas?

Same lock this picture is on my Tacoma. The cover is rubber, these come from the retrax tonneu covers and have been around for years.

So after spending some time with the folks at RSI this weekend I thought I would share the major take aways.

    1. The new latch does exist and its AMAZING. Yes it will be fully weatherproof and unlock from inside. Yes it will retrofit all the old caps.

    2. They have improved the packaging greatly to prevent damage in shipping.

    3. The 2022 Tundra Cap will be out soon. Here is a prototype with the new Kitchen Set

My roof “vent” leaks every time it rains. Gonna just figure out a way to seal it off. Not like the cap is airtight on the cab anyway.

@Mike's Custom Toys Still have any adventure models in stock for the 5.5’ Crewmax?

I’ve seen quite a few references made about leaking from the positive pressure valve and other areas with RSI. Mostly from Tacomas. Any extra insight with Tundras? I’m in western Washington and rain is obviously an important consideration most of the year.

edit: I’m interested in the RLD too, I’m curious if you have experience with those as well.

Mine leaks. Haven’t had a chance to disassemble and figure out how to seal the positive pressure entry.

The cap and bed are far from air tight so not even sure what the point of that “valve” is.
