No they replace the latch completely. The new latches have had some problems, so this is a good solution for those as well

Thank you for your reply. I’ll hold out for something that works with the new locks as they are much better for those of us that deal with heavy snow and ice and camp inside our caps in the summer months.

Did they end up fixing the locks on these? I know they came out with a second generation but wasn’t sure if that fixed the freezing issue. Looking at purchasing a topper soon.

    Couple questions for the group.
    1. How are the caps holding up for those who have owned them for a few years?

    2. Considering ordering one for my ‘21 Cmax. Have they updated or changed anything on the 2.5 Gen design or are they still the same? I read above about the lock recall, anyone recently order one for a 2.5 Gen?

    3. Are they still only making the 3rd gen caps in Texas or have they expanded their production?

    4. Last question, I have a prinsu rack from my old truck. What can I expect for installing a prinsu on an RSI? Any modifications needed to make this work?

Ive have mine about two years. They seem well-made for the most part. I like the modularity and access through the doors.
I am working through several leaks at the joint between the roof and front and rear panels and at all windows. Customer service has been responsive, but the proposed fix has mostly been adding caulk or RTV sealant, which leaves a bit to be desired, in my opinion.

@Mike's Custom Toys Will a SmartCap from a 3rd gen tundra work on a 2nd gen? Both Crewmax.

I know cab and tailgate designs differ. I’m just curious if it’s doable as this style topper seems to sit more on top of the bed rails and tailgate rather than over/around as some other hard shells do.

    TIA

Is your truck a 6.5’ bed? What made you decide on adventure vs sport? How was the assembly and installation, how many helped you lift it up? Thoughts since install? Does it have the new locks, any leaks? Watching this a long time, thank you for the inspirational post! Looks great

yeah, 6.5ft bed. I didn't want or like the look of the windows on the sport model.
it came with the new locks, I'm sure they all do now.

It hasn't rained enough since I got it installed to see how water tight it is. I did notice that a fair amount of water comes in around the tailgate itself. If you're trying to keep it watertight you'll have to deal with that area (on the truck, not the cap). Personally I don't care about a bit of water getting in, its a pickup.... If I really needed that area to be bone dry I would have bought a Sequoia or something.

3 of us installed it, we got it done without much issue, but having a forth would have been easier.

I have had this on my 22 for about a year now. I do need to take a look at the filter in the pressure vent. It just started leaking when we get heavy rain.

Hey all, new member here. I've previously had a 2007 trd off road tacoma and a 2021 trd pro tacoma. Today marks 1 week since stepping up to a 2025 tundra limited with off road package. Through all my research the smartcap is the only brand I can find that accommodates the bed and rear view mirror cameras with no modifications. Does anyone know of any other bed caps that the cameras work with? Secondly, how many have installed the rsi themselves? I am limited on dealers and best deal I can find is $400 for the install. Is hassle of the install worth paying $400. Thanks for any feedback on the rsi.

No it is not worth $400 for the install. We actually install or ship for free. I am not aware of any other cap that works without relocating the camera. Just make sure you follow the instructions and have 4 people to lift the cap.

@Mike's Custom Toys do you know if the units shipping out for the 2.5 gens have updated locks/latches or are they blowing out of their old inventory?

Its a mixed bag right now. The SA made caps typically come with older style latches and latch covers. The "New" latches that release from inside are typically only installed on NA caps. The 2.5 gen caps are all SA made currently.

@Mike's Custom Toys Do you guys sell enough SA and NA caps to compare the quality differences of both? I want to get a Smartcap for my 2024 crew cab with a short bed and I assume it will come from Texas. From the reviews I’ve read on one of the Smartcap Facebook pages, the caps from TX leak like a sieve and the black paint falls off. Paying $4500 for a spaghetti sieve makes me nervous lol

Yes there are some differences the NA caps are built using automation where the SA caps are made by hand. The NA cap is a more uniform product, the SA caps can have minor blemishes due to the nature of being hand made. The automated paint process has had some setbacks but Smartcap has stood behind every one and made it right, even replacing the whole cap at times. Leaks come back to the attention to the instructions and proper installation. Remember happy customers dont always post things to facebook but unhappy ones will.

Anyone have a similar issue like this with the new 2024 or 2025 Tundras with the automatic motorized tailgates?

285/65R20 Toyo Open Country ATIII. Factory 3" lift, they rub on the stabilizer bars even though Toyota says they shouldn't.
"Tires larger than 285/65R20 may cause rubbing/contact to surrounding parts. " I'm guessing the 20" TRD wheels have a different offset than the normal wheels.

The aftermarket parts guy at my dealership laid out the max tire size when I bought my truck. (Factory 3" lift as well). I think he said 285/60/R20 were max until you upgraded to the TRD sway bar. I upgraded the sway bar and stuck with 33.5's just for the milage and minimizing weight on the wheels.

Anyone mount their cap by themselves? Using pulleys or something similar? Looking for some success stories. I have one buddy that can help before 11am and another buddy that can help after 6:45pm, lol.

I guess this thread is an echo chamber. I'll answer my own questions now that I've received the cap and installed it for anyone who is googling the same questions.

I got the cap yesterday. Took 2 hours to unpackage and assemble. It took 4 hours to get it on the truck and bolted down due to two trips to hardware stores. I ended up buying a cheap electric garage hoist from HF, bolting it to the ceiling of my garage, and using it to lift the cap and backing the truck under it. I used the square weld nuts to bolt a 2x4 across the T tracks and used an I bolt in the center of the board to connect the winch. For anyone else thinking about doing this, the cap comes with the square weld nuts already sliding back and forth in the tracks. They are M8-1.25 threads. I called around the day before trying to find some to buy and drive to a few hardware stores. The final place I called was an outfitter and told me the nuts come with the cap. Overall this method worked better than I thought it would. It was pretty easy to set the cap down on the bed, guiding it into place without sliding it around on the gasket.

I lined up the front of the cap(the forward cab side) with the front edge of the bed that sits below the cab window. This wall of the bed requires the additional flat gasket that comes with the cap because it sits slightly below the sides. On the rear of the bed(tailgate end) the cap doesn't really match the the rear corners of the truck. 2025 CM short bed. The corners of the cap stop about 1.5" short of the corner of the bed. The tailgate on these newer Tundras is probably 4" wide with a lip sticking up at the rear edge so I can kinda see why RSI used the forward facing edge of the tailgate to align with. But we're definitely going to have snow and rain land on the wide shelf of the top edge of the tailgate and seep towards the caps tailgate window. Which is kind of the least of the worries because when you start looking at the corners of the tailgate, there's just big gaps in the bed of our trucks. There's no way the cap is going to seal all the way around the truck. There's also two low notches at the front corners of the bed. Where the cab side bed wall meets the two side walls of the bed. Luckily I park in my garage and live in a state with little precipitation. But I will have a ton of dust get in through these gaps.

The automatic tailgate. When I first set the cap down in it's resting place, I tested the auto tailgate and the two ends of the cap gasket that has the tab inserted, created interference with the two top corner edges of the tailgate. Enough to stop the motor from closing the gate. I trimmed the gasket to remove the lower flange and solved the issue. But then I installed the clamps and set my drill to a low torque just to get the bolts mostly tight. This brought the cap down and compressed the gasket enough to stop the gate again. I trimmed some more and fixed the interference again. When I torqued the clamp bolts again using a 50 in/lb torque limiter, it again caused the tailgate to push against the now severely trimmed gasket ends enough for the motor to stop. When the tailgate is closing, if it senses an obstruction, it will disengage, beep like a rocket ship with a check engine light, and go into "you need to manually open and close me" mode. This new auto tailgate on the 2025's is not a good thing. I haven't gotten a chance to address the gasket again to create more clearance on the top corners to allow the tailgate to close under the motor. I think I may have to essentially remove the gasket altogether back to where it meets the bed walls and flatten the metal gasket tabs. Along with the natural gap between the tailgate and the bed vertically, I may have to tolerate some gap between the top corners of the tailgate and cap to allow the auto tailgate to operate as Toyota intended. I really wish the auto function was just left to releasing the tailgate from a closed position to fall back under the natural weight of gravity and fall open softly like my 2016 did. I am happy to manually close my own tailgate. A person can one-handed close the gate faster than the motorized Toyota function and without all the noise and beeping.

The cap I received is a 3 pc roof assembly so I have three large seems on the roof. The flat gasket that comes preinstalled on the roof components isn't straight and in some areas provides enough channel for water to sit in. I'm going to buy some black silicone and fill in the channels today and readdress the tailgate.
