Reusing stock tpms on new wheels? Tpms on spare as well?

    Just as the title reads, trying to find out if I can just reuse my stock tpms on the order of wheels I just placed.

    Also does the stock spare have a tpms I can use on my 5th new wheel?

    Besides being able to sell my old set with them included, any benefit either way getting new with my order or keeping old?

    How do guys who run a 5 tire/wheel rotation do it regarding tpms?

    Yes you can swap them over. The spare doesn't have a tpms sensors.

    So to run a 5th wheel in rotation I'd have to purchase a spare tpms then. Got it.

    I don't think the Tundra can be programmed with a 5th sensor. I'm sure someone will chime in on how they handle a 5 wheel rotation.

    Edit: Don't necessarily believe my statement above, people have chimed in that more than 4 sensors can be registered and that the truck will actively monitor the 4 sensors for which ever wheels are currently mounted. Keep reading other responses below.

    I had a 17 Pro and now have an 18 Limited, neither of them had a TPMS in the spare.

    Interesting. That is the first I've heard of a 5th sensor. I swapped my stock rims on both trucks, but this wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong.

    I have tpms in all 5 tires, but the truck only monitors 4 at a time. So if you actually need to monitor your tire pressure, you need to get tpms in all 5 wheels and reprogram every time you rotate your tires. If you don't care about monitoring your tire pressure and just need to keep the light off, then you can just put in 4 tpms and don't need to reprogram every tire rotation. You'll still have 3 tires being monitored but if the one without the tpms is on the truck and not in the spare, that one won't be monitored. Might be different on other years, but this is what I've found on my 2015.

    Stock spare does not have tpms in it.
    The stock tpms will fit on the methods. If you swap over your stock ones to the new rims you don’t have to reprogram. If u get new ones they will have to reprogram. New ones aren’t that cheap vs paying for unmount.
    No need for 5 tpms. I believe our system only reads 4. You can do a 5 wheel rotation still, where ever the spare goes you will have to keep an eye on pressure bc as it won’t trigger the tpms light.
    Keep your oem ones. Or get new oem ones. Or get denso aftermarket.

    Awesome tnx Joon. So what if I reuse the 4 stock and purchase a 5th to install. Can having 1 different cause any issues? Do I need 5 of same or can 1 be aftermarket? Am I better off getting the 5th from Toyota so all the same?

    Also I'm dap tuned so I dont want techs going into my ECU unnecessarily to end up seeing or deleting? Do they have to do that to reprogram?

    Damn just when I think I got it figured out I'm getting smacked with bad news.

    So just to confirm. Lights on my dash drive me crazy. So let's say I just swap 4 over to new wheels and leave 5th without. If I rotate that tire in is it just a matter of me having to keep an eye on the pressure, which is fine. If while a wheel sits in my garage not being used or near truck makes a light go on dash it will drive me nuts. If I understand correctly. When the 4 are on with tpms they will all read correctly and cause no lights? When 1 with tpms if off and other without is on, simply that wheel without just wont read? It will not make any lights go on dash an no need to reprogram?

    Not really sure about mixing oem with aftermarket. If I had to guess, I would think they all need to be the same brand for them to program. But that’s purely a guess. I don’t even bother with programming mine anymore. Most of the time I’m in the truck I’m aired down anyways. But when I did program it, I had America’s Tire do them.

    Lots of misinformation here. I have had 8 tires 4 mud and snow , and 4 hwy tires. Each year I switch over so 8 sensors are in my system. No stock spare has a sensor. As far as taking to the dealer to get them programmed ANY tire shop (Les Schwab) in my area can program them. It’s true in my 2013 and my new 2018. If the sensor is within range it’s read.

    If that wheel sits in the garage you will loose signal to that sensor, which will trigger the light. You can put it in bed or under bed or on your roof, just as long as that tire has pressure (30-ish psi) and is within the vehicle no lights will go on.

    You are saying that your truck remembers all 8, so no matter which 4 are on the truck it will read them just fine without reprogramming?

    No lights come on for the summer or winter tires unless flat. I switched them myself. Think about it if you park in a dealers lot surrounded by trucks and sensors it does not read those. It only reads the serial numbers registered in your system to monitor

    Here let me clarify. I hate lights on dash. I either want to swap 4 and purchase 5th Toyota sensor if it'll read without reprogram each time regardless of which wheel is on. That'd be ideal.

    I don't want to carry on truck all 5 at all times, only when I think I could need. I don't want to leave a wheel with a sensor behind and it cause light on dash until next 4 or so rotates.

    So what's best bet for me since I don't want lights on dash and don't want 5 on truck always.

    @Joe Dirt the extra tpms you have was programmed into your system? Whenever you swap does it relearn the new 4 you swapped over?
