This thread has great advice I won't repeat. A great FREE resource you can try (used in a way other than intended, but with no downside except the time you invest) is
    https://www.governmentjobs.com/

    1. Pick any job you might consider from those currently open; fill in the requested info to create your application.

2.You may or may not actually press submit to apply for that specific job. But by the time you've worked through it, you'll have organized your relevant skills and experience, then save that profile.

    3. You can then modify your profile as you go, to customize for each job or, if you want to be ready to apply for several different types of work, prepare multiple versions.

Basically, I think the process of filling out a profile could help you whittle down and organize all you have to offer, to fit on one page, AND many government jobs are using this kind of site and, although there's a place you may attach one if you want to, don't require an actual resume.

    IMG_2295.jpg

I haven't done a resume in several years but do well with wording and grammar; I'd be happy to do a final edit after you finalize content and before you print. I am pretty good at interview prep though, so if you don't get a contact option for TJ's wife (who sounds like an excellent resource), or if you want more than one person to help you prep for interviews, I'll be happy to help. Go get it!

I'll help in any way I can. I've had plenty of experience writing/updating my resume.

    Sell yourself (most important)
    keep it short
put yourself in your possible employers shoes when writing/reading your CV
    SELL YOURSELF

since these fed jobs don't like military talk, why not convert some of these into "civilian" lingo. e.g. Squad Leader = Team Leader

Took an elective in college that covered resumes and interviewing. One of the best classes I ever took. Don't make it boring and plain like every other resume out there. There are a few great sites that have tons of free templates to choose from, literally all you have to do is fill in the blanks.

Would also recommend a cover letter depending on the job.

Pm me if ya want some examples!

I've served on several Best Qualified Panels (Government jobs) and the biggest mistake is a generic resume that doesn't mention the posted job requirements. Look at the posting and make bullet points of the requirements. Then, fit your experience to each and every one of those points. The reviewer needs to draw a line from the requirement to your qualification. The more lines connected, the better. I've reviewed many resumes that didn't hit a single job requirement. List your other experience in a generic format with few details. You can fill that in during the interview. Once, a resume was something you typed up and sent out to everyone. Now, it's something you fit to each job listing and send out to the contact at a single company or agency. Don't bother with a lot of personal details, they no longer count. Be sure to list service dates and that you were honorably discharged, that's important for a Government posting. Hobbies, family, and other activities detract from the focus of the resume. Keep those for the interview, and only then if the interviewer asks.

There is a lot of good advice in here. Just to add to that contact your equivalent of a transition office. They will have someone there that can help. Taylor your resume(s) to whatever your applying for. Some government jobs will require a much longer resume. Also take all your military job bulletins and remove all military terminology from them.... this is the hard part.

Ex: In my last unit I was a Maintenance Controller for our squadron. I was filling a billet that was meant for two ranks above me. I was selected out of a pool of about 30 Sergeants. I ran the squadrons maintenance department consisting of over 60 Marines from 9 different work centers and managed the material condition of 15+ helicopters and all required ground support equipment totaling over 100 million dollars of government assets.(this number may be off just guessing for right now)
In my past position as a Maintenance Supervisor I was responsible for managing the workload for nine different workcenters consisting of over 60 employees as well as the material condition of 15 aircraft and all required support equipment.
Lastly take up everyone’s interest that is willing to read your resume and give you feedback. It will make it that much better for when you start submitting it.

That's my biggest problem. Removing military jargon and putting in the civilian equivalents. It sucks.

and the military version of a transition office BLOWS! They have people to "help" and I've never received anything in return when looking for jobs with their "assistance". might just be my base.....but they aren't worth the time here or other places that i know people have tried using them.

A couple suggestions (I used to review dozens of resumes a month):
-If submitting electronically, convert to PDF so you don't lose formatting.
-Create a resume for that specific job. I edited mine for every job I applied for.
    -Spell and grammar check.
-One page unless it is an upper level job.
-If you also fill out an application: HR filters will eliminate you if you don't have the key requirements (ie. a degree).

So true. I get military resumes sometimes and they don't bridge the gap between military lingo/experience into private business.

Its hard....specially with no guidance. I'd you could actually air down and talk to someone in the civilian sector that does the job you are applying for, it would help to convert the lingo.

Oh that sucks! The one I used in NC was pretty good. I didn’t have a resume before that and I spent probably a solid week formatting my first one. I guess it’s a good thing some fellow Tundra owners are looking out and willing to help. I used a format from Pages and changed it a bit.

Lots of good suggestions here, it is Ok to have more than one resume. IE create a job specific resume for the work you are applying for by pulling only the experience from your past that fits with the job you want. Make sure you tell the hiring manager or the HR screener in words why your listed skills will satisfy the job requirements. I see you were a leader and could handle lots of responsibility. Most managers want someone they can rely on to do a job right with little explanation or follow up regardless of the type of work. How does your past experiences satisfy this requirement? get creative when describing and make sure to provide examples of your abilities and how they made your commanding officer's life easier.

I used www.myperfectresume.com to build mine. It walks you through each section and gives you suggestions and examples to use. The only negative thing is at the end they want you to pay for a subscription to download your finished resume. I just used them to build it, then at the end I took all the info and copy/pasted each section into Microsoft Office so I didn't have to pay.

Start outlining all of your training, experiences and accomplishments. Start writing down dates (like graduation or job start/end dates). Pretty much all info that will be generic regardless of the position. If possible, quantify what each accomplishment did i.e. $$ saved, time efficiencies gained, staff count reduced, errors corrected, volumes moved, etc etc.

That info will carry over to any job, then you can tailor some specifics to the job you are applying for.
