Replace drain bolt gasket for oil changes?

Hi fellas! For those of you that do your own oil changes, do you or have you replaced the drain bolt gasket?

 

its a good idea to replace it, I personally use the metal and rubber style and replace if it looks damaged

 

Replaced it when I put on a new Fumoto valve. Don't plan to have to replace it anymore.

 

Haven't changed the oil myself yet but the gaskets are so cheap that I'm going to replace them. I always changed them on my Harley as wel.

 

Is that a dealer part or a parts store part? Mine didn't appear to be damaged and it's not leaking at all but it seemed like something that should be replaced.

 

It's from a parts store, they all have them. They seal better don't have to worry about leaking

 

Those valves are dangerous. See them leaking all the time at my shop. Seen a couple ripped off. Not worth blown engine. Quick release engine oil.... not a good thing.

90430-12031, 10 for $8 shipped. So, next oil dump she'll get a new gasket. The Fumoto valves look a little sketchy to me. I can see the convenience of it but if something were to hit it and damage it I'd be in a world of hurt real quick.

 

Used them for years. '90 Jeep Comanche P/U, '09 VW Beetle, and the Tundra. Never leaked a drop. Never opened (they lock in position), never came loose. Wouldn't trust any shop with them though. Most shops could screw up a wet dream. I do all my own stuff.

 

Good that you've been lucky, but still why does anyone need to quick release their oil?

 

Not a matter of quick release. That has nothing to do with it. It has to do with never spillng a drop of oil, not having any oil run down your arm, not having to use a catch basin of any sort (using vinyl tubing on the valve, drain into an empty quart or gallon oil bottle, shut off when full, replace with another empty, and fill it, etc, until crankcase is completely drained). No clean up. Just take the old oil in to your recycle place and bring your empties back for the next time.

It takes more time to drop and replace the skid plate than it does to change the oil. And dropping the skid plate is a dirtier job.

 

That's why I bought an aftermarket skid plate with a door. It also protects the drain valve. Easy oil changes.
Could just take a 4 inch hole saw to the factory one.

 

I guess when your do it yourselfer it makes it slightly easier. I just throw mine on lift at work zip off shields with cordless impact and pull plug. Couple minutes no mess.

 

I too am a fumoto valve fan. I have one on every vehicle I currently own except the Harley's and I think that is because they don't make one for a Harley. They work as advertised, and there is no chance of stripping the treads on your oil pan if it installed correctly. Never had one leak, and it makes oil sampling very easy! If you are sliding your oil pan over rocks this might be a whole other story.

 

Fumoto fan as well. My last z mower even came with one from the factory.

 

We sell those. They're the metal/fiber type. It's probably a good idea to replace them about every other oil change.

I'd buy them when you buy filters.

 

When I had my Tacoma I bought filters from the dealership. They would throw in a free gasket for the drain plug with each filter.

 

When you change jobs it won't be that easy. Very few people actually have lifts at home. Probably <1%.

 

Very true. Like Tundraplatinum, I too just throw mine on the hoist at work and do what I need to do. If I plan my day accordingly I even get paid to do my own maintenance lol.

 

Even if I change jobs I'll have lifts at next place. Been prefessional tech 23 years.
