I have a seal leaking behind my transfer case front companion flange. I took the driveshaft out thinking I would just have to remove the nut and pull the flange off to replace the seal but there is no nut. Im kinda confused because I am not able to get the flange out with pry bar and dont want to try to get it off with a puller and break something. Anyone have any experience with this? Searched the web and couldnt find anything. Here is a pic of what im looking at. A1EABC24-7F84-4845-BD0E-F37F3A1B0905.jpg

I dont know. I dont want to try to just pull it. Was looking at some parts diagrams and there might be a retaining ring inside but im not sure if thats to keep a bearing in.

Those typically come off with a pry bar between the flange and case. When you put enough force on it the snap ring will pinch down in the groove of the shaft so you can slide the shaft out. GENTLY pry and it “should” come out. Bump bump wiggle wiggle kind of motion..

I tried with a pry bar but not a whole lot with not knowing how it worked. Thanks. Have you replaced this seal before? I couldn’t find anything online about that seal being replaced.

Haven’t done this exact one but I have worked on several similar output shafts designed the same way. May have to find a way to tap it a bit from behind.

Sometimes there’s a bit of play that will allow you to push the flange IN a hair. Then tap it OUT from there.

Well after a couple of calls and buying TIS for 2 days to see exactly how to get the front flange out to replace the seal I figured it out. You have to open up the transfer case in order to remove the snap ring and then you can pull the flange out. A lot of work for 1 seal.

If you're gonna split the case open it probably wouldn't hurt to replace all the seals. If that one is already leaking the others may not be far behind.

Yea, mine started leaking last year. Toyota quoted around 1800+ to replace that seal. I've just been monitoring the levels. Sometimes it doesn't leak for awhile.

Reading through this thread it appears that you opened up your t case and replaced seals. If so, wondering if you might be able to provide any more details on what it took to accomplish? Was there anything special about opening and re-sealing to make sure the gears/timing didn't get screwed up? Im looking to do the exact same repair. Thanks, there's not much other info on this out there....

    bumping this thread.

I have the same type of leaking seal, and looking to see if I can knock this out at home, or if it's better to just pay a shop.
