I have the remote start option on the Tundra. I can start it via the remote no problem, but in order to get into the truck I have to hit the unlock button. This subsequently turns the truck off. Does anyone know if there is any way to keep the truck on while I unlock the door?
Seems like this should be the case, but as for now it does not seem like it.

I did some quick web browsing ...looks like this is common and is not a "problem" but set by Toyota to do that.

That is what I found but did not want to believe it. I've had many other factory remote starts and never had a similar issue.
    Thanks for the help.

I have heard this complaint from co workers and friends with their vehicles. Safety feature I guess.
I will also opt for an aftermarket one if it allows me to keep the truck running. Also want the feature of having AC or heat on with remote start.

The solution is an aftermarket remote start system. ;)

My wife's 4Runner has the factory remote start. She likes that it turns off when the door is opened. Can't be stolen that way.

Is there a monthly fee with the smart gps via smart phone?

No model number when looking it up on viper website.

There is a fee one year or 3 years on the unit or course you can renew. 3 years is cheaper than buying year after year. Almost all viper can do smart smart.
Csviper you need a model number to the unit?

i beleive there is. no way you can start your care "virtually anywhere" without using some communications service. i read it somewhere that there is a fee.

Regardless of towers, Viper does charge a fee to use the app to start it from virtually anywhere.

I just renewed mine, and it was just under $80 for a year. I can get a 3 year for $140. I don't have the GPS tracking option, which jumps it up. The service runs on a Smartphone or Blackberry.

There are lots of model numbers available and i guess i just need to look into what the features are of each.
Looking up the model number you have this one comes up: Viper 5904V Responder HD 2-Way Security and Remote Start System. Doesn't mention smart start or mobile use.
When searching "viper smartstart security + remote start system" on Amazon there are several model numbers to choose from. VSS5000, VSS4000, VSS3000, 5706V, etc.
I assume they are universal and not model specific.
You mentioned that almost all can do smart start so i guess i chose the features and 1way vs 2 way remote that i want and also add the mobile app and service.

Starting the truck in the winter from the airport shuttle on its way to the parking lot will be priceless.

Next question is how hard is it to install?
I am planning to put this in my wish list for my wife to get me for my birthday or Christmas.
