Same here, and I had the very same mindset for a while...but then, skiing the whole damn winter and waking up routinely at 5AM every weekend made me break down, and I caved in.
There is only some many 20 degree morning and days where I'm willing to step into a frozen truck, after 8+hrs in the same temps outside.
    :/

I bit the bullet and started to pay for it after my free year. My last vehicle I could not have remote start (range rover sport). My wife’s civic and now her pilot has remote start. I did it as a convenience for our kids since I drop hem to school in the mornings. I also like that the heated seats and heated steering wheel keeps its settings once the vehicle is turned off. It sucks paying for it but ohh well. I can literally be next to the vehicle and using the fob won’t start it 75% of the times.

And in warm months you can put in pause mode and skip the 15 charge ..I have yet to do that but it's an option.

Your FOB remote start will work without paying for a subscription. You have to activate Safety Connect and Service Connect, both are free for 10 years. Then you have to agree to Toyota's Master Data Consent.

That can all be done in the app. Once done, start your truck and let it run for a few minutes, so it can update the settings. Turn your truck off, and your FOB remote start will work.

Here's a thread I started on the subject.
