Been putting my emergency stuff together as well, and bought one of those Rhino 3"x30' recovery straps and a Bubba Rope Gator Jaw soft shackle. What I had used in my previous Tundra was not the same quality or strength so I replaced it, and I prefer soft shackles they just seem to make more sense to me (less flying at me if it breaks). I've only had to extract someone stuck in mud once, and another that dropped his rear tires into a crevasse, in over 24 years owning 4x4 trucks but despite the rare use, it pays dividends real quick to have quality stuff. I knew nothing about recovery techniques just used common sense but now I am taking the time to learn best practice, and get proper gear. This forum is great for that.

@Tzvia Aweaome! same strap I bought, plus their tree saver one. I picked up some gear America 8t shackles, but I plan to get a pair of soft shackles too. Need to get one for the hitch.

Almost done upgrading my stuff. Decided to get a couple of hard shackles and a hitch shackle. Just need to get one more soft shackle and a tree saver or similar (for using two tow points). I think the next time I need to help out a poor soul, or need help, I'll be more prepared and less Macgyver.
I think that the hitch shackle beats just using the pin, any day. I'll certainly have a better idea of what to do. And maybe I will replace my wood boards with a Maxtrax. Just need to find a sale...

I got mine at quadratec. Remember to not over tighten the pin in your d ring hitch. It is an absolute son of gun to break free when after a recovery. Tighten all the way and loosen 1/2 turn. This prevents from having to wrestle with it later on. By the way, I leave mine on; risky I know but it suits me just fine

We just learned about this in a beginners recovery equipment seminar. Never thought of this, they said to NEVER EVERE use the ball of a hitch. It becomes a flying death trap if or when it breaks. I bought a specific recovery hitch that goes into the receiver that has a dring. The factory55 is soooo nice but very expensive too.

I guess if you have a straight pull you can use the pin like that but run the risk of damaging the strap on the metal edges of the hitch if it rubs the sides. Those hitch D-rings are not expensive, I got mine (photo a few posts up) on Amazon under 30 bucks with free prime shipping (WO pin but those are cheap too). Piece of mind. Recovery points on front, hitch mount point in back. Some shackles (soft and hard), recovery strap, tree strap, boards for use with jack or stuffed under tires for recovery, good shovel and a pair of leather gloves. Wish I had this setup when I was struggling to free a mud stuck minivan near Bryce Canyon in late spring many years ago.

I have been meaning to look into one of the D-ring hitches. I don't do any recovery, but what are the thoughts on this? I have a Tri-ball hitches, and the 4th side has a tow hook. I didn't really buy it for recovery, more of so I didn't have to carry around multiple hitches. I think I got it at tractor supply. I'm wondering now if the hook on that is just as dangerous as the ball since they are all mounted the same. I've only had to use it for very minor recovery, as in the weight of my truck idling forward was enough to get them back with traction.

My opinion, don't use the hook. Get a D ring hitch.

A concern i have had for quite a while is actually is the strength of the hitch pin. I can't get it out of my head that the pin is probably made in China and is not up to standards and will shear off and now you have a heavy projectile (hitch) flying at ya. I am sure i am probably overreacting but does anyone know of any hitch pins shearing off either while towing or pulling someone out that is stuck?

If you want to be overly cautious, during recovery you could run some rope from the dring to your tow chain anchor point. Keep it loose so it's not taking weight, but will catch the hitch if the pin breaks.

I know this thread is old, but having a first time truck and researching what I need to make my truck useful to help others this winter, this was very beneficial.

    Thanks for the link
