See low pressure area of rotational streamlines in bed at 1:01. Effect of lowering the tail gate at 2:39. Effect of adding a bed cover at 2:56.

Sucking exhaust fumes into the cabin is possible, particularly if the tailgate is down, with side windows and sunroof closed.

Did it to a brand new Ford with one of those tiny square openings in his back glass. You could see the steam coming off him, he was so mad he didn't have a full roll down back glass.

I found this out the hard way. I went camping and a bunch of fir needles fell in the bed. Once I hit about 50 MPH they flew into the cab. All of them, at once; all the way up to the windshield.

I’m not sure what wind dynamics really is (maybe an oceanography term?)...but airflow over vehicles and wings has always been referred to as aerodynamics or fluid dynamics in my professional engineering experience. Fluid dynamic theory, modeling, and testing in a wind tunnel definitely say a low pressure zone exists rear of the cab which could cause exhaust to be sucked into the cab if conditions are right. I think the fact that leaves, dirt, pet hair, etc. others on here are reporting getting sucked in confirm that air is getting sucked into the cab from the bed.

I may have fallen asleep a time or two in a science or engineering class, but I was usually the one to break the curve come exam time on my way to three engineering degrees.

All that said, the Crewmax rear window rocks and mine’s down all the time, except we’re about to enter yellow pine pollen season here in NC.

When I first bought my Tundra, I thought being able to roll down the rear window was a sort of novelty. Not something that I'd use often.

Now that I have had the truck 3 months and the weather is getting better, I am starting to realize how nice a feature it really is. Helps cool off the inside of the cab more quickly, for starters.

I'm now glad to have a rear window that opens after 20 years of not having it in my old Silverado. Didn't realize what I was missing.

Sometimes I roll down the road with all the windows down in a beautiful day and I'll notice that 90% of the other cars have the windows all up. I bet most sunroofs are never even opened.

I’ve used all my sunroofs. I don’t like convertibles...

I just got my tundra a few months ago. I can’t wait until spring weather.

I don't know about you but it sounds like this guy ^^^^ might know what he's talking about..

This aerodynamics stuff is the same reason a guy on a bicycle can draft behind a big truck and keep up with it at highway speeds.

I’m far from an expert on fluid dynamics as my degrees aren’t AE or ME, but from the experience I have, I see this as the reason Toyota put the warning in the manual. If someone has another explanation for the warning, I’d like to hear it.

I remember reading a year or so ago about a kid who died from CO poisoning in an open wakeboarding boat because conditions aligned in the wrong way.

The only time I roll it down is when I'm driving

It's half half the reason we bought a crewmax

I can see how fluid dynamics/aerodynamics could be mysterious to some. Were you in science class the day they demonstrated the "Bernoulli Effect"? Airplanes fly, but not because of "anti-gravity matter" in the wings.

If several posters have commented that leaves, pine needles, and dirt have been drawn from the bed all the way up to the dashboard...Why would you argue that exhaust fumes can't be drawn into the cabin? Carbon monoxide weighs nothing compared to the mentioned debris, and is just as likely to be drawn into the cabin.

Genius will open side windows to maintain positive ventilation of the cabin, while positive pressure moves through the cabin to fill that low pressure zone in the bed.

I agree with rolling down back window to non-tundras too. I like it in summer you can get all the hot air out quickly as you drive off and get ac cooling ASAP

Wish you didn't need the full-size cab to get this feature :(
