Definitely a blown inner axle seal. This is what caused your bearing to go. This needs replaced too in addition to your wheel bearing. The inner axle seal is on the axle tube itself.

To do this job, the mechanic also has to remove the drum brakes, disconnect brake lines, ebrakes and bleed the brakes afterwards.

You're not going to be able to buy a whole new OEMToyota axle assembly that is already pressed. There's a Dorman one available but I really would not risk buying it. If your mechanic is telling you to get axle assemblies he either can't press them or doesn't know how. You've still got plenty of other usable components on the axle assembly such as the shaft, bearing housing, and backing plates. Buying used axle assemblies you're guessing they will still have life left in them. Dorman is crapshoot quality compared to OEM.

And ideally the breather on the diff, I wouldn't doubt if it's frozen and that little $10 neglected part helped to cause this $1k problem.

I'm telling you, there is no rear hub. There is no "buy the whole assembly". All you can do is get the parts and pull the axle to press them. It's not hard; it's just a precise measurement. I can have the axles pulled in about 15 minutes. Watch that video I posted. @des2mtn nailed your problem with the backing plates. Mine had the same problem. Backing plates were covered in diff juice from bad axle seals.

Also, your tires turning different directions is normal with an open diff. Only a diff with a locker will turn the same direction.

You have an open diff. Your getting all spun up about this. The solution has already been given. Does it suck? Yes, but doesn't change the facts. Either pony up for some other schmuck to do the work, or get the equipment needed and do the repair yourself. I usually opt for B. Everything you need is available on Rockauto, or from Toyota, or some other third party should you choose.

Yeah, but would 0.2" work? I don't have a millimeter stick. It's on my list of tools to buy.

That's genius! I'll just stack two 5mm allen wrenches in there when I press, as feeler gauges, then hope and pray I can pull em out after.

You guys are genius. It was a wheel bearing and it was a painful job if u don’t have a press which I don’t. I have another problem to pick at now. My shifter is loose and I remember tightening it as tight as I can and the shifter doesn’t seem to “lock in gear” unless I push the shifter forward and then it locks. The shifter seemed better after I tightened it but it may be cracked or broken around the steering wheel where the shifter connects to if that makes sense…..Any ideas guys???

Glad to hear you got the original issue fixed. @Tundra2 replaced his shifter with a pick and pull part I believe

Yeah, it's possible this thing is cracked, it's worth checking - it happens a lot in the earlier models

May have had it backwards, maybe the one in the truck looked like it was from a pick and pull? Remember someone had a broken column and discovered it was not original upon disassembly. I just remember in my mind the picture of you holding the shifter not attached to the column.
