Got my new license plate in the mail. Went to remove the drive out tag and found that the left screw was stripped out and only the right one was holding it on. After investigation the tag screws only thread into a piece of plastic. Is that normal or did the dealer perhaps not install the correct hardware?

Not unusual you will have to get some bolts, washers, lock washers, and nuts. Pretty easy fix. I just told the wife last night one of mine are strip and I’m going to the store today or tomorrow.

Yeah, there is a good piece of steel with manufactured holes for that purpose it looks. You would think it would come with something different or a welded nut on the back side.

Exactly what I did with my 2nd gen Tundra. However, I didn't use lock washers on mine. I have a washer and nut on the backside and was rather tough to hold them in place with the spare tire in the way.

Mine is in plastic up front and back. Not a good setup for what the trucks are for sure.

Could also try and find some u-shaped spring nuts like pictured.

Dont know what the previous owner used to hold his plate on with, but the holes were too big. Had a toilet install kit laying around so thats what is holding mine on.......brass bolts threaded from the backside and trimmed right at the nut. It works so I never even considered replacing.

Same happened with mine, front and back. I got some zip ties and cut them into short strips and held them in the holes while I tightened the screws. Held up good so far.
