Be careful, the lock(nylon) part of the lock nuts does not engage the stud, and they can fall off:anonymous:. I ended up shimming above the skid with washers and using thread locker with the oe nuts to reduce the protrusion some. The description seems to have changed...

For your truck all their skids are great. Mine have taken some good hits and done their job quite well. I'd buy 'em again but I'd never buy the tank skid for my 38 gal. tank. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do about that. I'll probably try to reinvent the wheel.

RCI was at the FJ event at ToyTec last Sunday. I lifted up a front skid for an FJ. Very beefy.

Terrible design for a diff skid. That thing will cause more problems than just running without a skid. :der:

I had to switch my carriage bolts out. they are ss and they kept galling so I switched to grade 8 yellow zinc hex heads.

I quintuple these concerns. If this dude does CAD work, is he an engineer? If so, he should know better. The concern itself is not the bolts. They will be in shear to what I presume to be 1/8” to 1/4” plate. At least I hope it is.... Anyway, the shear point of those bolts is probably really high. I can probably calculate it, but it would be unnecessary. The issue becomes the base material these studs are in. With this design, the bolts will be affected by a moment in the direction they aren’t designed to take a load, so my concern would be diff side failure. At minimum, leaks from these bolts moving or possibly shearing with a really hard hit.

When I posted earlier and said these needed to be supported in the L direction, this is exactly what I meant. The skid needs to take hard hits while moving forward and completely distributing the load to the tubes/pumpkin. This design concentrates it on those studs and that’s asking for them to fail.

If he wants more advice, tell him to create a clamshell design that datums off of the tubes and pumpkin. This is possible without attaching something to the diff bolts.

    Just my .02 cents.

You know how much i have been wanting this rear diff skid and i can say i am out with that design. Really wanting a design similar to those that currently manufacture for the Tacoma, 4Runner and FJ Cruiser.

More like a whole dollar! But I totally agree everything you said

Those are proper diff skids right there. That's what I'm interested in if I decide I need a skid. I'm still not convinced it's needed

    What we are looking for:
    • 3/16" or 1/4" steel - BAMF, Boztec and RCI all use 1/4" steel.
    • Tight to the diff
    • Cutout for the drain plug
    • No hanging bolts/nuts
    • Pinion and axle clamps
    • U-Joint and pinion protection.

The last photo looks good. One thing I've heard is that the skid rattles and becomes such a nuisance that it just gets removed. The RCI at the top looks great but after a while I can imagine that you won't be able to tighten it to keep it tight. The bottom photo looks like there are plenty of threads so you should always be able to snug it up.
Nice pics Brian. I hope you're feeling better these days.

Sorry for the delay - Been traveling for work.

I just talked to Doug and expressed all these concerns. I made a point that we want to stear clear of mounting to the carrier assembly and would like to see something attached to the axle. He was open for a redesign and is going to look at it again to see if he can address the concerns. In the early talks of all this I did send him pics from rci and boztec but sounds like he was trying to come up with his own design. He has these examples so we'll see what he comes up with. I did stress that the goal was to hug the diff as tightly as possible.

Once we have a good quality design that everyone (most) are happy with then we can move on to material, thickness, finish, etc.

I have the 26er tank so i guess that won't be an issue except the missing additional 10 gallons.....for now...

This is the clamshell design I was referring to. I hadn’t even seen these things before.

Can we add rotational protection in the longitudinal direction to prevent from catching the pinion shovel and ripping the thing off.

I could see this as a problem, but a through design in between the clamp engagement would resolve this. So would shaving a couple thousand off the interfacing faces of the clamps and technically making the clamp ID slightly smaller than the tube, to address the rattle issues.

Also, I want to retract my commitment on this. Unless I see a prototype that satisfies the requests above, I’m out. Another thing that is concerning, if this guy is designing stuff like this, who will be producing them? Do we need to validate the integrity of the welds, structure, etc?

My plasma table will be here in June. I’ll start playing with drawings to see what I can come up with on my own.

Yeah I haven't seen anything for the tundra that I like. If I ever decide I really need one, I'll just have one custom made. There are lots of shops that will make a one off for a reasonable price.

I read that most everyone has complained about the figment of the Victory skids like many that have been developed for the Tundra. Has there ever been a good kid made for the rear Tundra diff?

I ditched the skid and welded a bash plate to the diff, a 1/4" piece of steel bent to conform to the curve of the diff.
