I’m talking about cutting the gears themselves. Gear hobbing is such a cool procedure and the guys that do it are in a small niche of the machining world. It’s so simple but so involved at the same time. Fun stuff.

Oh no, never seen that process. It would be cool.

Just changed my differential oil a couple days ago in my 2016 that I purchased new and now at 95,000 miles. This was the first time oil changed after pulling an 8,000 lb. travel trailer around the country for a few years. I was very impressed with the Tundra that had a little sludge and one small piece of shaving from the edge of a gear on the magnet about 1/4 inch and expected to find a lot more due to miles and load but not so. Had I known someone would be asking about this could certainly have taken photo but now to late, it's churning around in Lucas.

That would be a pretty close. That is from a LS clutch pack that came apart due to abuse on a diesel truck (11.5 AAM rear axle)

I've serviced over 200 differentials in my adult life. Of all makes, models, brands, mileage, abuse, and neglect. They all have some material on the plug.

I've done first oil change on probably 80+ differentials of various makes and models and they all look really ugly the first time.

I saw it but it might have just been stuck in the sludge. Its either a piece of shim stock, which is no big deal, or it's chrome that has flaked off a bearing, race or cup. Not much to do about that either.
I'd still run it and not worry

I just did the front & rear diff @ 30k on my 2017 DC. I do quite a bit of towing & engage 4x4 a few times a month to exercise the system.

front was dirtier than the rear which was a little surprising.

Ok, so what brand & weight of diff oil are you guys using to either "break in" new or "run & maintain" non-new trucks in order to get the longest possible life out of your differentials? Recommendations solicited & listened to...

Stock Toyota diff oil from the factory is an acceptable answer – no judgement whatsoever from me.

I used Royal Purple my first change at 30k. After additional reading/research, used Amsoil severe gear the second change at 55k. 75-90 both times.

The front on the second change still looked new. I’ll probably go 50k on the amsoil assuming no water fording.

The rear on the second change wasn’t black (like it was at 30k) but wasn’t clean either. I’ll keep it on 30k intervals which is about every 2.5 years for me.

Everything I’ve seen / read / watched indicates amsoil severe gear is the best or one of the best fluids available and the price is right. It is either true or they have an amazing marketing team.

Not trying to derail this thread, but I'm just about to swipe the card for some fresh fresh Amsoil Severe Gear, and I'm wondering how much to buy? The pull down menu on the Amsoil website indicates that 6qts exactly will do both diffs, is that true? its a 2018 4x4

I was able to get both done with 6. I used 3 bottles with a pump for the front and 3 bags with the left over from the bottle for the rear.

I bought 7 the first time and still have the unopened left over quart on the shelf in my garage.

This thread pushed me over the edge to do mine before I make a 1000 mile trip towing a trailer. Only have 2470 miles on it. Decent amount of junk on the magnet. The oil had quite a bit of glitter. The Amsoil bags made it a quick and easy job to change. I already had the crush washers because my T100 uses the same ones.

Was it needed? No idea. I won’t say someone should do the change this soon but for me it wash incredibly easy and cheap for the peace of mind. I’m going to change the front after winter since I use 4x4 high quite a bit.

I just had my 25k service yesterday and I asked the dealership replace the diff fluid. They looked at me funny and said I'd have to pay for it, but I was OK with that. I didn't see the drain plug when they pulled it, but it was enough for them to write it up and document it. They told me they if pretty much anything happened to my rear diff, I was covered, even if the warranty was expired. They got the overall service manager involved and he was surprised.

They did ask if I had noticed any functional issues or unusual sounds, but I have not.

I don't know what mine looked like compared to yours, but it was enough for them to document it.

Wow. I would have expected them to not say much to you and wait for failure before saying it’s covered even if warranty expires. Glad to see integrity.

Thanks everyone, your replies made me feel better lol. I’m doing the front diff and T Case tomorrow, we’ll see how they look. I’m running Ravenol 75w85 for the diffs and 75W for the t case. The manual calls for 75w85 but I know alot of people run 75w90 with no issues. This stuffs a little pricey but I’ve heard good things about it and I like that’s it’s the exact weight the manual calls for. Apparently Toyota used to recommend 75w90 but they changed to 75w85 a few years ago.

are you running the above linked fluid in both your diffs and transfer case?

edit: I see they offer a kit that has 2 bottles of the 75w

I personally like Mobil-1 Synthetic 75W-90. I've tried Lucas Oil in the past, but it had an odor.
Also, am I wrong in using the same oil in the transfer case??? I just get a 12-pack case of Mobil-1 and knock it all out at once (ft, rr and tc) and have enough left over to re-do the front when a CV axle breaks.
