I bought some Valvoline 75w-140 for my rear diff thinking I can do the oil change myself. Once I got under there I saw a "LSD Oil Only" sticker and checked my manual which states above 0 degrees to use SAE 90 or below 0 degrees to use SAE 80W or 80W−90.

The Valvoline 75w-140 I bought states it has limited slip additives but I want to follow the manufacturer recommendations. Any recommendations on which oils I should consider? I am in Colorado where it only occasionally gets below 0. Thanks.

The factory service manual says the 75-140 is for non-LSD. I’d just return it and get the right viscosity

Whatever you do, don't make the mistake I did and use that oil in your LSD diff.

Use Lucas 80w90 in the rear diff if it's an LSD. Save your money.

I ran what you're looking at in my LSD rear and no amount of additive would've made my rear end not chatter.

Just ran into this thread. How would I know if I have the lsd?

Mine had a yellow sticker on the rear diff stating such bit not sure how I would have known/identified it if it wasn't there

Enter your VIN @ www.toyota.com/owners/ and retrieve your "as built" configuration.

LSD rear shouldhave a sticker indicating it assuming you're not in the rust belt and/or someone hasn't taken it off.

Trust the sticker. Especially for Canadian users, the truck info at Toyota Owner's website isn't always correct.

Yeah, about that...the site stopped displaying my details correctly a while back, so I wrote them to complain. They sent me a PDF of my actual config, and that's what I refer to going forward

Thanks. No sticker and nothing in the spec sheet either with vin. The truck was pretty clean and original when I bought it so, I’m thinking it’s a no on the lsd since I don’t think the sticker would have been removed from the previous (original)owner.

I mean, even if it isn't LSD, conventional Lucas 80w90 works both ways. Thing with LSD is, there isn't much except Lucas 80w90 that works without chatter.

Not sure what you've got going on though.

You can pull the fill plug and look into the hole. If you can see into the carrier and see spider gears, it’s not limited slip. Also jack up the rear end while in park and spin one tire. If it doesn’t spin it’s LSD. If the other wheel spins the opposite direction it’s not LSD unless your clutch pack is toast.

Sorry to bump an old thread; I'm planning to change fluids in the transmission and differentials on my 04 DC with an LSD. Regarding the rear differential, do I need to add an LSD additive if I go with the Lucas Oil 80w-90 gear oil?

Nope. It works as-is with Lucas 80w90.

And on the trans, if you don’t already know, drain and fill is king, there’s no viable reason to drop the pan, you’re probably asking for headaches if you do.

What brand makes the squeeze bags for the front diff again? I don't remember how i.filled it last time but adding some the other day during my ECGS bushing fiasco was a pita..

At least two make a full syn bag that will work with the LSD rear, without using additives.
    • Valvoline Max "Flex Fill" bag
    • Amsoil SevereGear "Easy Pack" bag
You can readily buy hand pumps for the quart bottles of Lucas 80w90 though, it takes about 40-50 pumps to get everything out of the bag with the cheapy scAmazon pumps (Slippery Pete brand, or whatever). My old hand pump would get me there in 20-30, but have no idea where the hell I put it (or if a worker snagged it) while we were finishing out the basement.

    Are you meaning this?
    And no additional additives?

Yes. That specific gear oil works, as is, with zero additives. It’s what is currently in my LSD diff today, after spending almost $70 on my preferred Mobil1 full synthetic gear oil, and getting diff chatter.

But with it being non-synthetic, you should change it in half as many miles as synthetic with normal use (15-17.5k) and if towing, 7.5k-10k miles. Those are *ideal* numbers, if we had a dollar for every person on here that’s gone 150k miles without ever changing diff fluids, we’d be rich.

As rank, and nasty as the old was I’ll probably change it about 3K miles just for my peace of mind then bump it up to recommended miles between changes.
Wouldn’t the Lucas work for front diff, and transfer case too?

Iirc the front diff and tcase spec a 75w-85. Synthetic is good for these.

Only need the lucas, motul or as one guy found supertech for the clutch type LSD. This prevents chatter.

I used full syn in front diff and tc, and will likely keep it that way, doing shorter intervals out back.

FWIW researched to find Supertech 80-90W gallon < $20 that seems to be the most economical and called the manufacturer to confirm application for BestGen LSD. They comfirmed it is "recommended for Limited Slip / Positive Traction rear axles" as noted on the bottle. No additional additive was needed for my 2003 with LSD and it runs without chatter.
