This is my old HPI MT2. Used to be a nitro car, did a home build brushless conversion first, then bought a proper chassis conversion with top plate and stretch when this truck was still relevent. (Like 15 yrs ago haha), kit was built to compete with 4x4 traxxas slash. Its now 2wd for the sake of conserving differentials which are hard to find these days. Its actually rips and handles really well. Hardly gets used but is fun when it does!
Has a tekkin rx8 sc, traxxas motor, 1/8 buggy wheels and associated shocks.

I have the same truck. Put a victory pipe on mine.. after install. Fired right up. Ran for prob 20-30 min and it died on me. Haven’t been able to get it to start since. Prob going to have to bring it to a hobby shop to get it tuned up. I have played with the air/fuel settings to no luck and changed the spark plug so I’m not sure. Did u have to tune your motor after pipe install?

Spotted a gently used 4x4 slash for a good price on letgo. So tempted to grab it but not sure I can escape the wife to pick it up.
    :smack:
Been wanting to pick up another Slash or similar for when my brother comes by so we don't have to take turns on mine. Plus I can't go Days of Thunder style and "put him in the wall" unless he has a car to drive.

After I put bartalone pipe on I put the carb back to factory setting. Then tuned from there. I am at high elevation so I run it leaner then stock. Did you put the carb back to factory setting after pipe install? Are you running 25:1 fuel mixture? Did the primer bulb run dry after your last run?

I never adjusted the carb settings until it wouldn’t run for me, so it was still at factory setting when it died. My dummy mind, didn’t look at primer bulb before I tried to restart it. I believe I was running 30.1... may need to remix a batch.. I have ran 2 strokes for many years but never a performance chainsaw/weed eater motor. Def need to get it going again. It is so much fun. The 5t is a lot bigger than pics do justice.. but it will haul A$$...

My son has a Skully truck and it’s faster than he needs it to be when out of training mode(9 yr old)

I use to run nitro trucks when I was younger (t maxx, rustler, and a few others I can’t remember). Thought this would be a lot cheaper on gas and run longer but hell I proved myself wrong as of right now..

Reset the needles back to factory setting. My bet is it wasn’t quite set to factory. If you need the settings let me know I have them. I would recommend you clean the carb and drain the gas tank. Buy some 91 or higher non-ethanol fuel and mix 25:1. Also pull the carb off and put the car on a stand and start to burn all the fuel in the motor. Make sure to put it on a stool so it doesn’t run away. Are you using a kill switch? Also. Sometimes the kill button will get stuck in it’s housing. Check that too. Is your lipo fully charged? If it below 3.7 amps Per cell it won’t start.
Let’s get your 5ive T up and running again.

I will try that.. I am using the killer bee kill switch... have the spectrum dx5 pro rx

have the killer bee lipo 7.4 I believe I’ll have to double check.

when you say take carb off and burn out the gas? You saying to try to crank it while the carb is not attached?
Thanks for your help. I am def ready to get the beast going again.

Nice looking truck! They are a blast to drive.
Yes crank is over with the carb off. The motor will turn over and go WOT for sec or two. Re -assemble and torq carb bolts to 3.4 Nm.
Factory carb needle settings from closed H 1 7/8, L 1 3/8. Give me a shout anytime if you need some help.

I ve never messed with an rc car, but they remind me of slot cars back in the day. I remember going to the track with my uncle when I was a kid. They have come a long way.

Back when I was a teenager in the 70’s I used to have model airplanes, but I kept crashing them all the time so I figured I’d have something that would keep me on the ground, back then they had heathkits, you built the radio controls piece by piece and Heathkit also had a r/c car called the Spectre, it was an eighth scale car that ran on a .19 enya developing supposedly a half horsepower, it would go 25 miles an hour which was 200 miles an hour to scale, the thing was a lot of fun, You would use a bicycle upside down with the wheels pointing up to start it with, when I got that thing started every kid on the block would watch this thing race up and down the street

haha! My first ‘real’ RC car was a Grasshopper. Got it for Christmas when we lived in Singapore. I was 9 or 10? Beat that thing hard for a couple years. Made my way through a few other hobby grade buggies and then took a 30 year break.

Grabbed a mini 4x4 Slash for my wife for Christmas and it goes camping with us. Nice small size for packing on trips.

I've only done 2 and the first one hardly counts because I went one color. With some planning and patience it isn't bad. I used wax to mask off areas last time and that made it pretty easy.

There are lots of good videos on YT to get an idea of the process. The defender was my first attempt at painting a RC Car. Masking tape, x-acto knife and Tamiya spray paint for RC car bodies were the only things I used. It also took lots of patience, a homemade light box (iPad with blank white screen) and templates printed in reverse from the interweb for the words and images. I wanted the Defender to match the real-life boat.

    IMG_2167.jpg IMG_2168.jpg 59233808419__B5B8091A-653B-4108-952F-74016A812E9D.jpg

The Tundra body was a little different. Nobody made a spray paint for polycarbonate (lexan) plastic that was army green. I had to lay down a layer of matte clear first and then used a standard acrylic (?) paint that was the right color. The matte clear coating gave the green paint a surface to adhere to and it is still holding strong.

Got it. What kind of wax? I just want to paint it one color quicksand so shouldn’t be to hard. Not getting paint were it doesn’t belong is gonna be the hard part. Also looking at YT they paint the inside of the body? I woulda never done that haha

Oooooooh brother so much to tell you. Yeah you paint the inside, so you have to plan a bit. I paint dark colors first, that way you aren't putting a dark color behind a light color which can darken it. With the inside painted you won't see scrapes every time you crash or flip. Only bad thing is you can't get a matte finish.

You'll want some sort of accents. Consider painting the grille insert black. Better yet, what I did was use a strip of that rubber stuff you put in the tool box to lay inside the grille. I painted over that with a silver, then removed it and painted with gun metal. It left the look of a honeycomb grille. Consider doing the windows or anything else to break up the sand color.

The wax is kind of like that Elmer's glue you used as a kid. You paint it on with a brush and let it dry. Then you use a exacto knife to cut lines where you want to separate paint, peel what you want to paint and go. So if you were painting windows black, peel them and paint, then move to the next detail, peel and paint. At the end you'll peel the whole body and paint it.

The Tundra body I did I was gonna go plain. I saw a few videos of this guy and decided to live a little, Im glad I did. He's an amazing painter, watch his stuff to learn.
