I'm thinking of getting into RC trucks or crawlers. My son (8 yrs old) loves them and I loved them as a kid. He has the Costco Bronco crawler and keeps asking me to get one so we can drive together.

Where is a good place to start?

I went to the local hobby shop and fell immediately in love with:

    Traxxas Defender
    [IMG]

    Element Knight Runner

These things are pricey though! Is it a bad idea to start with trucks like these?

I don't want a Costco special for myself as I know this truck will become "our truck" to work on with my son as he gets older. He already loves building and modding.

Generally, we aren't about speed but more about exploring and some crawling.

    Recommendations are appreciated!

Try looking at 1/10 Summit. It is dual purpose built with a HI-lo transmission with remote servo control... (You do everything with the remote)... for both truckin' round and Crawling.
I bought one as a feeler to see what my kids likes doing and my son has claimed it as his. He loves going from the grass to the dirt, and then to the rocks. Overall it's a very capable crawler and decent at speed (30mph max).

Thanks! The Summit looks like a very similar price range. It’s an $800 unit here in Canada.

Didn't think to get pictures while racing. But my wife and I had a blast racing some RC's in the snow. Normally she doesn't get involved but she had a blast. Favorite comment "its sounding a little funny now"
Was missing a rear axel  thankfully it the truck I broke the axel on and I had bought spares the last time.

2 weeks ago I helped a neighbor move. While I was loading stuff I saw a neighbor who I talk to (Ken) was out with his son, each of them driving RC short course trucks. I talked to then a bit and they said they're just going to bash it up in the field behind our block. I said maybe I'll stop by soon and bring my Slash.

I was walking my dogs Friday and another neighbor who I talk to was having a little fire and some beers in his driveway. "Aaaye I heard you're into rc trucks!" I laughed and said oh Ken told you? To my surprised Ken turned around and was there with a beer in hand. We chatted a bit and decided to hit the field with shovels today.

We built a few jumps, nothing sophisticated. I think by the end of this month we will have some stuff worth taking pics of.

So today I rebuilt my shocks, just new bladders and oil really. I'm trying a thinner oil im the rear shocks (against my instincts) to see if it rebounds faster. Seems like over night I gained 3 friends to bash trucks with.

The UDR and the X Maxx are built for two different terrains. The X Maxx is more of a big basher, big air launching high speed monster truck and the UDR is more an off road racer and is designed, built and handles much like the real thing. Two totally different beasts

Shit's going to break so you want something easy to fix with minimal tools and something that has readily available parts. My opinion..anything Traxxas.

Ordered another battery and some tires that should be better on hard packed dirt. I got good news and bad news about my order.

@Darkness what tires are you trying for hardpack dirt? Its such a balancing act. Trenchers eat most surfaces, but super hard packed dry dirt turns everything into racing slicks it seems

Long ago I had JC goosebumps. They were awesome on hard pack. They lasted okay as long as I wasn't doing a lot of wheel spin (rwd problems). I'm gonna try the medium compound Pro-Line gladiators. I'm really fighting the urge to just get a 4x4 slash, hopefully these tires help me resist.

I have trenchers but they aren't giving me much bite on this dirt lot. They are good overall for a basher, good on street and dirt that has a bit more moisture in it, but they might as well be drift tires on hard pack.

i hear that! Lately it’s been so dry/hot the bashing spots have the traction of baseball infields

Yup! You know exactly the kind of dirt I'm talking about. From what I read the softer compond (M3) would give me better traction but would be toast after maybe a dozen runs. I went with the M2 compound, I'll report back on the lifespan.

you telling me you don’t like driving your 2wd slash in circles?

To me the monster truck tires might be a solution. They are significantly wider

Time for an overhaul. My buddy painted up another body for the Xmaxx after some bad carnage left the last one unusable. During the downtime, I did a full bearing replacement and refresh of various broken parts found during the teardown. New bumper mounts, diff housings, swing arms, shock towers, steering tierods, and wheel nuts. Overall, this thing is so solid and it feels new again for about $75 in bearings and the misc parts.

Ended up buying a rustler 4x4 for my kiddo! Brushed version, shes is 8 so thats plenty fast for her. This car is freaking amazing. It handles soooo well. Super tight handling and quickness

    Nice.

My daughter is 8 too and the brushed versions are plenty fast, even in training mode. You're going to have a lot of fun with the Rustler!

Surprisingly my tires and extra battery got here on schedule. I'm gonna see if I can swap them on and hit the field first thing tomorrow morning.
