I almost hear two sounds. I hear the rattle that kind of sounds like a heat shield, and I also hear what sounds more like a diesel engine at idle. Not sure if it’s two different issues or if they’re one and the same, assuming my hearing is accurate.

Either way, please update us when the dealer diagnoses it. Hopefully it’s nothing or just something minor.

Replace the driver's side primary tensioner for the timing chain. Fixed this noise before. Pain in the ass to diagnose and pinpoint.

By more oil they must mean heavier weight.

Yes, I have. You have to pull the timing cover off. It is a solid 2-day job for a professional tech. I am like 99% sure it is the tensioner rattling. I will never forget the pain in the ass it was to diagnose. If I knew how to upload videos I could provide several videos of my theory.

You can remove the serpentine belt, and remove this large nut on the timing cover allows a little bit of access to the tensioner. Start the engine up, and you will see the orange arm on the tensioner bounce with the rattle noise. See my image.

I’m pretty dang positive that’s chain slap and more than like the driver tensioner. That’s probably the only Achilles heal of this motor

Now just install a SC when you/your tech is in there. Getting ready to drop that bomb on my wife. We’ll see how it goes
    :spending:

If you (or anyone else) figures out it is their tensioner and wants to replace it, this is probably the most comprehensive video. Not positive, but pretty sure I’ve seen them all

Don't just throw parts at it. Take some steps to pinpoint the noise and diagnose it. But your videos sound just like what I have fixed previously. I remember the noise as a metallic tapping noise that was cyclical. It was worse during cold starts and would go away. And randomly return.

I don't recall if that affected the noise. The tensioner has a both mechanical spring mechanism and a hydraulic feature. The back side of the tensioner actually has oil passages for engine oil to pressurize the tensioner. So, oil pressure does have an effect on it.

Hmmm they told me it’s Normal and that the ticking / rattling is due to the age of the truck which has 97000 but this is not a Toyota dealership I bought it used at a Nissan dealer what do you guys think ?

    Definitely not normal!
I’d take it to a Toyota dealership.

Yeah, it doesn't sound normal to me, either, but who knows? Hopefully, they'll successfully diagnose it for him, and if not the dealer, than maybe a shop that specializes in Toyotas.

For reference, my 2015 has over 150K miles and has never sounded like that. Sometimes in the morning, especially when it's cold and the engine's not warmed up yet, it sounds a teeny bit like a diesel, but not at all like it does in OP's YouTube video.

Well quick up date it seems to only be rattling when it’s cold start this morning I let it warm up for 5 mins and gets quieter then goes away because in that video I showed you guys I just got out of work and that day was pretty cold and I didn’t warm it up I just turned the truck and left

Definitely, have it diagnosed by a Toyota Master Tech or a Toyota specialty shop.

Pay for the diagnosis out of pocket, get a detailed repair estimate based on that diagnosis, and take the estimate to the dealer that sold the Tundra to you. Try and negotiate for them to cover the entire or a portion of the repair cost. Keep your expectations low though. Good luck.

Whatever happens, find a Toyota specialist who can warrant their diagnosis and repairs to perform the work.

If you're talking about the noise that sounds like banging against a heat shield, that's insane that they would call that a "normal noise". Mine has been going for ~2 years with no ill effect, but that doesn't make it "normal"...

Just my 2 cents. Two rattles found and resolved: one was the front passenger headrest. Put some tooth picks down the headrest tube....fixed. The other was the little plastic registration tab near the sunglasses pop out and interior lights. Put a cloth sunglasses wipe in there....fixed. I have the Outlaw cat back exhaust, which is part of the cause.

Guess I should have read all of the posts. Sounds like possible engine issues, not clicking inside the cabin.

Timing chain setup. Get it replaced. Mine sounded the same and ruined the engine when the timing chain bolt worked its way loose enough for the chain to come off. 9k for new engine. 2014 tundra 5.7
