Ironically, went to a party last night and a guy there showed up in a 2017 Tundra with the extra cab and short bed. He loved it. Talked to him a bunch about it. He said he can hit 20 mpg every now and then but averages around 16.

If I could just get Toyota to deal and get the price down to around $37k, then I just might be a new Tundra owner...

True that. I've had multiple Tacomas and two tundras along with BMW M3s and Audis. Have always been a huge fan Chevy and my father in law has never had an issue with any of his Silverados. But I've never had an issue with a Toyota either.

In a few years if I'm not in love with the new Tundra, I'll look into a Silverado HD.

But the one thing I will say is, if any of you start looking at Ram, Silverado, f150 forums you'll see that the difference. People here talk about lack of tech and bitching about chrome. Their forums talk about the mountain of issues they all have. "time to save for.. etc"

What impresses me is the ability of Chrysler products to rust out so consistently! It is truly amazing to me, and consistency does count for something! I've been fooled 5 times by Chrysler products and guess I was a slow learner - they sure do look good though. I am happy with my low tech outdated Toyota now.

I was just lurking on a Ram forum for the new 5th gen pickups and the amount of problems is amazing. They have a dedicated thread for owners to post common issues. 28 pages so far. It's so bad that they have a thread for people that have had no issues with their trucks. Only 63 responses.

That’s because most people go to a forum first to solve an issue they’re having with the truck/car instead of getting bent over by the dealer. Nobody takes the time to make an account just to say they like the truck. I’ve enjoyed my Tacoma and now tundra, but I’m sure I’d enjoy one of the other brand of trucks as well.

Vehicle specific forums are generally where people go to solve problems. Here and TW and not the norm.
It’s also a numbers game. These are machines. When you sell the amount of half ton trucks the big 3 do, there’s going to be more issues compared to tundras.

I think this is 100% true.

I think Ford and GM have the fleet market locked up. They have for years

My cousin is a service manager at a Ford Store. He said the biggest issues they see with the F-150 is transmission and leaking glass roof issues. Honestly, I looked at a F-150 for I bought my truck and actually didn't dislike the truck. I just have always drove Toyota's and felt like overall I would be happier with it long term.

I don’t buy that, the number of Corolla’s out there don’t say the same. We’re in trucks that outlast the 3 because of the company’s principles, it’s an undeniable fact.

Damn! A LOT of posts about problematic Rams. I see a lot of “it’s a new model year” and “there’s always going to be a bad truck now and then” and “every truck brand has issues” rationales. I like the looks of the Ram and I’m intrigued by the speed of the ecoboost but I’m really happy with my (knock on wood) extremely reliable Tundra.

Well I’d never get a sunroof anyway. Too bad about the transmissions. Are there still a lot of gremlins with the ecoboost or has Ford fixed them?

He never mentioned that, but I have heard others with the truck talk about that. Friends and coworkers that have the truck talk about just having small odd issues with the ecoboost. I actually drove one before I bought my truck and honestly I was impressed, but I just felt the long term reliability would not be there with the ecoboost. If you are one of those people that trade every year or two maybe not a big deal, but I like no car payments so I keep stuff for as long as I can.

Problem with the Ford sunroof is the drain. The line goes down the passenger side a pillar and out the floor board. You have to clean it out because it will get clogged. I got to hunting ranch one day last year and my brother (a proud F150 owner) asked to borrow my electric heater. He had all the carpet and pad pulled up in the passenger side and it was soaked. He says next truck will be a Tundra. We will see.

Having confidence in a vehicle is an underrated thing. I’ve enjoying the 49k trouble-free miles on my Tundra and I’ll probably give it to my son to drive. He’s only 5, so by then it’ll have about 300k miles—just warming up.

The 2019 and 2020 Ram guys are having issues with water coming in through both the sunroof and the third brake light.

I know when I bought my 2014 Ram, I looked up the reliability ratings and the majority of issues were with electrical stuff. Since I buy a truck for using it as a truck and not a mobile entertainment center, I never had a single issue with my Tradesman Ram. It had AC, power windows, and cruise control. That's all I need in a pickup. You can keep all that electronic wizardry crap; it only makes life more stressful and greatly increases the chances of something going wrong.

I bought a brand new Ford Fusion in 2012 as a commuter and it had the Microsoft Sync system. Worked for about a month. Took it to the dealer once and it worked for another week or so. Gave up after that. Put 92k miles on that car in two years and was happy with it. Traded it in on the Ram when I moved up to Idaho and needed a truck again.

Not dumbasses, just guys that don’t prioritize reliability at the top. I wouldn’t if I was a leaser and got a new one every 2-3y. We’re not bulletproof, we just have the least problems. The top 20 reliable vehicles in the last decade are mostly Toyota/Lexus’.

I’m a yota guy but the new ram is pretty slick. Curiosity got the best of me and with the huge discounts they are throwing around I checked one out.

The interior of the Laramie w/ 12” head unit was impressive. Blows the other 1/2 tons away IMO. All of them. Lots of room. Felt like good materials. Everything seemed placed well. Seats were plush. It had me thinkin’ about it for sure.

So I pull up the interwebs and while I agree the internet is a place a lot of people just go to bitch, the amount problems associated with a truck that just came out is pretty egregious and seems there are multiple threads on each issue.

    -brakes grind
    -truck wont start
    -truck wont go into drive
    -truck slams into reverse
-12” HU shuts off or barely functions
    -AC is terrible
    -roof leaks water
-front axle in 4x4 is grinding
-$2500 stereo upgrade is a fail
    -window seals leak air
    -clunky steering wheel

These are just off top of my head. The amount of TSB’s and recall’s for a vehicle not even 1 yr old (and costs $60k+) is absolutely bizarre.

Everyones answer is “take it to the dealer” (I don’t want to hang out at the MF’n dealer) and it appears FCA is clueless on a fix for quite a few of these common issues.

I like what they did on paper but it appears they bombed on execution for the first year model anyway.

I came across the same stuff, scary, but I wonder what percentage of all since so many are sold. Hanging at the dealer would suck.

I agree. The big 3 sell so many trucks, of course it is going to seem like a lot of problems. Doing simple math shows the following:

Hypothetical: (using numbers from posted link in OP) if only 1% of Rams had issues, that totals ~2,994 trucks. If 5% of Tundras had issues, that totals ~2,724 trucks. Looking at straight numbers, it would look like Rams are worse bc there are 270 more forum threads, service appts, recalls, etc., but in actuality, the Toyota was overall less reliable in that 5% of their trucks had issues vs only 1% of Rams.

I agree that Toyota is far more reliable than any of the big 3, I just think the numbers could be misleading. I'm sure there are plenty of satisfied owners of other brands out there.
