That is strange when you hear a guys walk out with 12k off sticker. The big 3 have done this for as long as I've been buying cars

Probably. I’m happy you got a good deal. I just don’t like their tactics. I drive by a Ram dealer every day. I like the Ram. It’s good looking and the interior is great. I am just a Toyota guy. They haven’t let me down.

IMHO I think it’s all marketing , you jack the price up then you offer the rebates , discounts , incentives or whatever the flavour of the month is so the buyer feels like their getting a great deal before they even make an offer plus it gives the illusion of huge depreciation. Now the buyer knows their going to loose money more with the Ram because everybody keeps hearing about how bad the depreciation is so they trade them in before it gets too low . Now the dealers get to sell a new truck and a used truck plus because of the bad rep for reliability they can usually get the buyer to purchase an extended warranty which is more money in their pocket . Hope I explained this right as to my thinking on it . I mean Ram sold over 833,000 trucks in 2019 so I don’t see them changing their game plan anytime soon , they were the #2 selling vehicle in North America right behind the F series .

12k ? More like 20k up here just for walking in the door . They offer 25% off MSRP a lot of the time .

I recently got a 20 TRD Pro and love it.

People complain that it's outdated. It's a damn pickup truck! Luxury and Pickup don't belong in the same sentence. The only thing that sucks is you cannot get a 6.5' bed in a crewmax. Other than that the truck is awesome. I don't need new fancy technology that will fail ~ 100K.

I drove the new ram rebels as rentals and they and the interior looks like a kid design it. The hood and front end is huge and limits visibility and the interior is junk. The one I drove had 19K on it and parts of the interior were falling apart. Also, good luck with your transmission in a Ram, it will fail.

I can't speak to the quality of Rams nowadays...but I had a brand new truck from Ford in 2013. The truck never left me stranded; had no major issues, and had plenty of technology...and the majority of it failed. I had issues with:

    - valve body separator plate
    - motorized driver's side seat
    - shifting patterns
    - media system (Sync 1 was the WORST)
    - speakers
    - driver's side rear door (would not shut when it was below freezing)
    - rear defroster window - replaced *FOUR* times in 100K miles for the same issue

There's more, but one gets the idea. Fully half of the issues were with things that people can live without. Features are simply more excuses for something to break or go bad...which is why I will *always* fall on the side of reliability, all things being equal.

I have to disagree given the price of all these trucks now a days, for north of 50K, YES, luxury should be included.

we aren't talking about a stripped out fleet truck for 20K.

    just my .02

Then we should cry about what things cost compared to the 70s. :)

A loaded up 1/2 ton from the big 3 compared to Tundra is still a big difference in price.

Technology plateaued in vehicles a awhile ago. Now it's all about who has the biggest tablet in their car.

There is nothing luxury about these vehicles, even from the big 3. The interior is junk and the leather is cheap. You pay a premium for garbage technology and reliability goes in the trash.

If you're leasing or plan on selling it while it's under warranty, then who cares.

    So just an update...

Had my eyes on a ‘18 Tundra, but dealer was screwing with me on trade (CarMax offered more same day on it...it was that bad) and just didn’t feel right - so I passed.

Mrs wants to see a Rebel and only one used within 50 miles, so going tomorrow.

I have came to the conclusion - I may just do nothing. Newer/fancier is nice..but end of the day what I have runs. No point paying out the nose for shiny. Granted mines 9 years old, has under 15k miles and still could pass for new - but just no thrills.

As long as you're happy with whatever it is, old, new, shiny, dull; makes no difference. Send us pics of the rebel when you test it.

Car Max is awesome. Typically it's a significant difference on price compared to dealer trade in. I would always recommend going that route and don't waste your time with a trade at a dealership.

Get what you want man. Everyone likes to give ppl crap on brand, but whatever makes you happy.

I got my '20 TRD Pro at dealer invoice, it took some work, but I've always been good at getting the lowest price possible on vehicles over the past 20+ years. You just got to find the right dealer.

Yea...it simply came down to this:

    - 40k cash in hand, would I buy the Tundra as demo'd new...answer was no.

So at 30k used with 40k miles...is it any better?

Granted my answer would be the same on a Ram - at 40k new (which is a solid 6k below the inflated number on a sticker) - Id say no.

At 30k used..I'll look, but I am not hopeful.

Good grief , you only have 15k on your truck now ? Wait till 2023 you’ll see if you like the new style Tundra and the Ram is supposed to have the 5C UConnect also , what am I saying with only 15k you could probably wait till the 2040’s come out lol

You never know. I know people with 100K on their Tundras whose trucks look better than mine, inside and out, and mine's shiny and new. I was actually about to buy a 2016 Tundra TRD Pro a few months back - 60K on it and they wanted something like $27,999.

With the mileage and yours being in great shape you would be much better off selling it outright than trade in.

To be completely honest with you , if the Rebel was a rental I wouldn’t touch it whatever the miles are on it they’ve probably been hard miles like pounding the piss out of it and going way over the payload rating . I can picture it , good old ( insert name ) rents a pick up because he needs to move 6000 lbs of patio stones , payload of the truck is say 1500 lbs and he thinks , screw that I can do it in two trips .... he doesn’t care because he doesn’t have to fix it .

    My exact thought on rentals

5% of the time they are over used...95% of the time it’s a car driver getting stuck in a pickup (lower depreciation and higher daily rate..so rental cos love them)

100% of the time neither renter nor operator take care of them. They all know they will be done with it shortly...and as long as it doesn’t “look” broken...it’s all good to them.

I am probably sticking with what I have for the time.

After sitting down and seriously thinking about it - I just dont see dropping 30k+ on a used tundra, or Ram.

Wife was anti-Tundra...but then saw a TRD Pro and said she'd be ok with that. Of course its outside of my comfort range financially right now.

For $1400 - I can have a 7" touchscreen, remote start and backup camera installed - even get power locks finally.

Granted I dont get 4x4 or a V8...but I have lived without these so far.

New plan - lay put the $$ (which is a fraction of what I would have put down on a replacement) - take the savings and apply it to the bank account for a while until something REALLY speaks to me.

    Might be a 2021 Tundra...might be a used TRD Pro...or might be a classic.

There are a few things I have wanted for a while. A late 50s/60s International pickup is up there on that list...a red belly Ford tractor restoration is too....and if the right early 80s Dodge half ton crossed my path - Id be hard pressed to say no.

I've had my share of "classic" cars..and I think I'm done with sports cars...at least the classics. I am more into the "odd ball" stuff these days...no more Camaro/Chevelle/Nova for me...of course if the right 1997 Firebird Formula in Silver came along...
