You mean engine; caboose would imply he was at the back when we all know he prefers being up front.

This thread brings back some great memories of my uncle who started working for the railroad when he was 19. He was 3 months before retiring and unfortunately passed away from a heart attack. He always said he hated his job due to always being on call all day and all night but the money was good. I know he was an engineer who worked out of Pittsburgh, PA and Ridgeley, WV. He tried to talk me into getting into the field after I graduated but decided to go the military route after HS. After seeing that he never had a life due to his schedule I am glad that I never got into this field but I always think about that great man every time I see a train. Kudos to all you guys in this field working your asses off and working those crazy ass shifts and being away from your family!

I don't work directly for the railroad, but they do pay the bills. I'm an engineering consultant. BNSF is my primary client, projects ranging from Minnesota to Texas. Have done several for UPRR as well, in Kansas, Oregon, and Illinois.
Started doing it in 2012, now transitioning to a more transportation planning-based role.

    A foamer.

They are the ones that hang around tracks and watch trains come through foaming and jumping up and down.

foamer (plural foamers) (slang) An obsessive railfan.

I read a few Thomas Train stories to my kids when they were younger, so I know lots about railroads. ;)

And my great-grandfather worked for the railroad around these parts years ago. No sitting with your feet up while the machine changed rails for him. All manual labour, and a hand speeder to get there.
