Radio station stops playing ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ amid Me Too movement

I don't care about 90% of the things that are out there, but today's hyper-politicization of EVERYTHING makes it impossible to avoid. It has overtaken the culture (movies, tv, music, sports, and the list goes on). And if you disagree with the nonsense they are pushing you are some kind of "fill in the blank"-ist or exhibiting some kind of "fill in the blank"-ism.

No, I just disagree with your stupidity and want to be left alone.

 

So... I'm gonna chime in as a voice for others on here that might not, and want to (because those that participate most on here are generally very conservative, male, 40's+ years-- i.e. the reason a younger generation feels the need to launch #me too, to raise objections to cultural norms they feel should not be 'norms').

I can hear the problems with this song. I've just ignored it my whole life and, y'all are right, I don't have to buy it. But to a sexual assault survivor, or maybe anyone under 30 that grew up accepting that we're each the boss of our own bodies (even my 11 y.o. son), and was cruising around some public shopping place or captive in an elevator, and happened to actually listen to the words of this song, it's pretty easy to recognize it's offensive.

'Hey, babe, I know you don't want to, but I do, so I put rohypnol in your drink....'

I agree it may be time to retire this one from public airwaves Christmas rotation.

Then, this being America, sales may skyrocket as individuals down load it to keep the Old Ways alive. But then, I think, now that we've all been brought to speed on the message of the song, how many of us would really go out of our way to keep it in circulation? Even if we agree we don't like whining, cry-baby snowflakes, we do love and respect our mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters....

So... yes, it's stupid about banning a song. But it's also a bit stupid to defend play of such a song. The #metoo people and conservative Americans aren't even having a direct argument. They want to engage in a discussion about de-normalizing sex without concent. And we respond by defending a song even we wouldn't listen to, and extrapolating to judging every change as bad, because we perceive we're being criticized.

Anyway, we don't change minds talking to each other. We'd have to be willing to talk with Them.

 

Maybe we should all call the radio station and request this song. As far as Charlie Brown Thanksgiving goes Franklin was added after the movie was made because Shultz wanted to diversify the show for all kids

I honestly never truly listened to the whole song until these things were pointed out. All I hear is "Baby its VOLD OUTSIDE" in a duet with nice harmony's.

If it's stupid to ban and defend the song then I believe it is a mute point.

You kind of have to like Will Ferrell or some of his sillier stuff. But it is his "silliness" that makes the movie IMHO. I probably didn't care for it too much at first, but over the years find myself looking forward to it at some point during the holidays.

 

I believe "Being offended" is choice, a choice one makes to feel so. There are no laws except those from the "offensive police" that protect anyone from being offended. If someone or some thing is offensive to you, avoid those folks or things - easy cheesy. Grow some thicker skin and move on! Chances are those folks or things were not meant to be offensive to anyone.

 

This is how I take the song as well. Two people in love and the man being persuasive for her to stay. Here’s a stiff drink sweetie!

Love this point of view! That’s the feeling I got from the song although I’m not from that era end it was hard to explain. Just needs to be shared one million times over on every social media platform. That way some of these mofos might actually get it. Same thing with a lot of other banned things from the past. I feel that a lot of the statues and historical monuments that have been removed we’re completely misunderstood. Add this song to the list.

This was where I was at with the confederate flag blow up a few years ago. Whether or not someone agrees with the racist imagery, it was stupid to defend it or be upset that it was removed. I’m a white male who grew up in the south, but could absolutely see why minorities would feel the way they do about it.
Do some things get taken too far? Absolutely. Unfortunately companies have to err on the extreme side of caution nowadays.
