Alright y'all, I've finally made up my mind and I'm going to be at Big Bend for a few days (mar 9-11). Looking to do some light offroading since I'm flying solo. I know Old Maverick Road is pretty doable but anything else?

    Thanks!

If you'll be around the Marfa area, take Pinto Canyon Road. It'll dump you out North of Presidio. Its a little out of the way unless you're coming from the North but its worth the drive.

If you want more of a challenge go over to the big bend ranch state park and tell them you want to do some fun roads.

Well unfortunately last Friday I had a fender bender in my Tundra and it's in the shop. So I'll still be going but I'm either going to take my wife's 4runner (4wd), or the rental Ram 1500 Classic (2wd). In either case, can't do any crazy off roading and gotta be cautious about any desert pinstriping. Still looking forward to some fun back road drives, though! How tough is Old Ore?

old ore will get you a lot of pinstripes. It’s 26 miles of rough road. It’s fun in some spots. We had a rain last month when we went so it made it more challenging. But if you plan on camping you probably won’t get a spot anywhere at the National park because of spring break. The state ranch you will easily get a camping spot because the pinstripes are a lot worse over there so some people turn around. The camping spots are more off the beaten path. Or at least the good ones are.

I booked a campsite in Terlingua so I'll drive in, roll around the park and get some photos/hiking in, then drive out. I would like to visit BBRSP but I'll definitely stay off the crazy stuff.

State park has gotten a lot more popular over the past few years. If you don’t have a reserved back country spot by now, it’s likely you won’t be able to get the same one for the entire time you’re there. I think that’s half the fun though, stay somewhere for a night or two and drive clear across the ranch to another site.

I’m not gonna encourage disobedience in the loaner but many of the “4wd high clearance only” trails are labeled that in order to keep Karen and her 99 Escape from getting stuck. Not all of them though, some can get a little rowdy. Whatever you decide to to, make sure you’re self sufficient. There’s no calling a tow truck and park rangers aren’t gonna come looking for the buried dodge that lied about being 4wd.

You should be fine doing old ore just go nice and slow. You might see me on the trail. I’m trying to get away from work for a few days that week.

I'll be there Monday through Wednesday. Look for the Blue 4Runner. It's my wife's...don't judge the stickers :)
