    Hi folks,

    Just a public service announcement...

This is a $12 shipped to my door fake Benchmade Bugout from China. Cosmetically it is darn close. In person you can tell it's fake by feel and the logo on the blade.

There is a glut of fake knives coming out of China and they are getting really, really good. So buyer beware!

Fakes in every sector are a big issue. I’ve had to replace 4 engines at work due to “Toyota” spark plugs.

The Chinese knock offs of everything are getting hard to spot.

That's why I only buy my knives, watches, etc from trusted sources.

Oakley's and North Face are highly counterfeited too. Everything is now days I guess, if there is money to be had.

In person MEC or when I'm in the USA, I buy some knives from Scheel's.

Now it's almost impossible to get any type of flipper or thumb studded knife or even Spyderco I'm Canada or shipped across the border.

In person or from reputable dealers, not Amazon or some jabroni on ebay. Here in Canuckistan, I've dealt with Warriors and Wonders out of BC quite often.

internet shopping is risky business more often than you'd think. people come into my workplace all the time to show me the great deals they've come across. i can't think of even one example in multiple cases where they actually got a quality item at a good price.

by the way OP wrote his post it looks like it was intentionally purchased knowing it was not authentic.

    I'm confused.

Did you see a listing for a Benchmade for $12 and buy, thinking it would be real or was it to see how good a Fake it was?

    Or

Did you buy from a website at high price and received this in its place?

I purchased this knife from AliExpress with the knowledge that it had to be a fake. It was only $12 (Canadian!)

Normally I do not buy known fakes. It perpetuates a cycle that takes dilutes the original and takes away from the original makers. I have an original Bugout and love it but wanted a cheap knife that I can just keep in my toolbox for garage and yard stuff. One that I didn't care about. I went to the site looking for fit for purpose knife, saw this and said why not out of morbid curiosity.

I posted it as reminder to everyone to be careful with Internet deals on these. If my posting can help one person not be fooled by purchasing a fake it accomplished it's purpose.

    The original version: https://www.benchmade.com/bugout-family.html

They are purpose built to be lightweight EDC knives and they are very good at it.

Out of the box, surprisingly yes. Shaved the hair off my leg with ease.

But the sharpness didn't last... and I am sure the blade finish won't either.

    AHHHH, good old AliExpress.

I purchased some slingshot ammo from them. It didn't show up. I filed a claim. They kept putting me off until after the date passed and I was out of luck. Then they banned my address, so I couldn't escalate.

That was my one and only experience with them.

Another point not discussed is these sellers can use cheap products to obtain banking/billing information which they can then sell or use seperately to process unauthorized transactions. Next week your at the bank trying to obtain a new card and disputing charges.

So many fake knives - China is at least “open” about their knock offs - I mean 12 bucks - it’s clear what your buying.

Pakistan on the other hand would try for $165 and look worse.

Trusted source for knives - problem is so much out there trades hands at gun shows and pawn shops - they take it in from someone believing it to be real…try to resell and then dismiss you when you try to educate them on the fake believing you to be trying to “lowball” them.

I just bought a couple of Buck 184’s - one from the first run and one pat pending - both I know are legit - but I’m finding a lot of sellers having problems because of the flood of fakes.

Bottom line - if it looks to good to be true, do a lot of research or trust your instincts. On the 184s - knife is now near 40 years old - they made 7500 or so first run - yet I can go on eBay and routinely see 20+ offered at 500-1500 - many complete with “original” boxes. You just have to stop and think for a second - how many people bought a knife 40 years ago - never used it, kept it mint in box ?!? I’m going with max 1% of the run - so now out of those 75 - how many are currently looking to sell via eBay - again that numbers gonna be tiny - if you bought something 40 years ago, cared for it all this time - why suddenly rush to cash in?

The fact 20 show up suggest either someone lied about how many they made - or someone’s lying now about buying and storing something in a time capsule the past 40 years.

Also see some “great” Randall Made fakes floating around from time to time - most are laughable - misspelled Randal, sawteeth all jacked up - no sheath…sellers always have a good story too - “it was granddads ww2 knife” - just laugh and say no thanks…it’s all I can do these days.

As to “supporting” the counterfeiters - I get it’s wrongly supporting someone who stole intellectual property - but I also agree no one is seriously passing on the real deal and buying these. No one is spending more on a value meal at a fast food chain than on a knife - and expecting the knife to last more than a few months. I like to use them to keep people from asking to borrow my “real” stuff - let them ask to see your knife - hand them one of these…either you never see them and the knife again - or they never ask to borrow a knife again thinking your stuff is junk.

I bought a Benchmade knife on the big E. The seller said it was brand new and was a store closeout. I paid around 120.00. When it arrived, I looked it over and everything seemed legit except the jimping, it did not have any. I checked them out online, then called Benchmade. Benchmade offered to verify it was fake but they said it would be destroyed if it was.

I decided to file a complaint with the seller and E. It took a long time but I got my money back. I watched the knife get back to him. It was immediately posted on E. on a 1 day sale. It sold for 80.00. I was surprised that E let him list it again. I only buy new knives from a dealer now.
