Received my official recall notice from Toyota today.

One of my concerns is the tech working upside down and backwards with a mirror may misread the punch mark and check off my truck as good to go. I’d just like to be able and check then double check for myself. Then the dealer can triple check it when it’s inspected. Better safe than sorry, we already have one member reporting failure while exiting a on ramp and his truck crossing two lanes, almost hitting the cement barrier before he gained control.

 

Someone mentioned those 8 sections of that circle have letters and it depends on where in that circle it’s punched, so they shouldn’t misread it. A post also said they don’t read it, but take a picture and send it to Toyota for them to read. This is a big issue and I think Toyota is trying to read it right. Imagine the lawsuit if they said you’re good and then your fails and ends in a crash with injuries.

Makes sense because they then have secured evidence just in case at some point a bad rack is put into a truck from salvage.

 

I'll try for an inspection and picture soon.

I live 150 miles from a dealership so no idea when I can get out there, though.

But I've also done a lot of wheeling and hitting full lock so fairly confident I'm fine.

 

Curious why they called out all those different models and not just 2021 tundras.

 

Cause the rack fits 07-21s, so if someone bought a bad one to replace theirs in a non-21 then they’d be part of the recall.

 

Oh gotcha, makes sense.

Talk about crap luck, blowing a steering rack and then it's replaced with one that's no good.

 

So if there are four cutting heads and four possible punch marks why is there A,B,C,D and also E,F,G?

Maybe the casting mold producer suggested a design commonly used for other things. If the shoe fits, wear it comes to mind!

 

agree with the casting design rationale and have seem similar in plastic parts time,date,stamps...just wondering why in the illustration why the additional letters E,F,G and if they had an other significance?

 

Probably just to eliminate any ambiguity. These circumstances call for utmost clarity.

 

LOL I kinda thought the extra letters beyond the 4 cutting head possibilities was kinda confusing...at least for me anyway...

 

Having extra spaces gives room to grow. Having extra letters makes consumers confused. Both are desirable from a manufacturing and servicing perspective.

 

Got my notice and appointment set for this week. I’ll post results .

Appreciate the latest info.
Received the recall notice and going in on the 7th or 9th this month depending on the dealership I choose. The closest outfit doesn't have the greatest track record working on a Tundra owned by a guy I know. Missing fasteners, bolts not tightened, etc.

How was the lettered clocking for the casting in the above post determined and is it accurate?
Should be interesting to see pass/fail results as this recall unfolds.
Will post results.

Funny they didn't mention their royal screwup with our racks.

 

The dealer I go to for service and such finally received the information on the inspection of the steering rack. I also received my recall notice today and will be taking it in for the inspection and picture taking as that is part of the inspection. Taking it in next Monday morning to see what is what??

 

Just plucked our recall notice from Toyota 2 min ago from today's mail...

They want the truck all day on Monday and even already assigned us a "loaner".

I see they have a used 2022 with @ 800 miles on 'er for $75K
Not three weeks ago they told me they wouldn't sell a vehicle above MSRP
