Power steering recall

I called the dealer.

 

When you say "we", are you meaing you and a mouse in your pocket or can you share a little helpful information on the status of new PS racks? Since I have no dog in this fight it doesn't help me but more useful information may help the other 22,000+ owners.

 

Got a call Friday, it passed inspection.

 

I am a dealer technician. I think one of our in stock units needs a new rack and 3 customer vehicles. Several others have passed. As of yesterday, there were no racks showing in stock in the country. I will check from time to time and update you all.

Just got some info from my people at Toyota.... mid to late February for the power steering racks to be available.

 

When is Toyota going to officially send out notices?

 

Knowing Toyota, the remedy notices will not come out until parts are ready, or near ready. The inspections that we are doing now are on vehicles that are here for other services. We check for recalls on every vehicle that comes through the door and if there is an open recall, we do it, or attempt to do it. Customers that just come in asking for something like this are usually people that have knowledge of the recall through the news or the internet etc., because like you said, nothing has going out yet stating that there is a remedy for this.

This is not uncommon, there is usually an interim notice that goes out, then the recall is launched, then the letters go out to the dealers. In this case, I think the remedy was 'released' so that the in stock units could be inspected and cleared if they weren't affected, so that they could be removed from the 'stop sale'.

Just my experience. This is not necessarily what is going on for sure.

 

My rig goes in for inspection on Friday - here’s to hoping I’m NOT among the few needing repalcement/service…

 

How can we get a diagram/picture of a good rack and a NOT good rack??? Or,,,,,
And explanation as to what to look for?? I will call my dealer tomorrow morning but I know what they are going to tell me. Dealer—— (“we have not heard anything like that yet!”)

My local dealership knew about without me having to give them any Safety Recall Notice info at all…

Any chance you can post some pics or the service bulletin of where/what to look for concerning the punch marks ?

 

Unfortunately I wouldn't feel comfortable doing something like that. As a technician, Toyota doesn't like us posting private information on forums and stuff. It's a long story, but not a good idea for me to do. The inspection takes just a half hour or so. The front skid plate comes down and a picture is taken with a mirror to determine the vehicles eligibility for a new rack.
I just did my 2021 this morning and it does NOT need a rack.

 

Had my inspection this AM. All is good. When in for service in 4 to 5 months, they will again inspect.

 

Wait, it either has x number of punch marks or it doesn't. Why reinspect?

 

I do not know very much about that stuff, x mark or no x mark. I am just sharing what my dealer said.

I sent a message to my outfit and have not heard from them.

 

My understanding is 4 machines ran the racks. 1 machine produced some bad parts due to worn or broken tooling. To identify which machine ran which parts, each is identified with a specific marking using a punch to make a number of dots. So, that enables a technician to visually count the marking and determine which machine ran your rack. I guess yours could have been run on the machine in question, and because parts are not available now they are just saying, "we will reinspect it next visit".

 

Let's please not ask this gentleman for anything that might even remotely endanger his job. I'm very greatful he's here giving what information he can.

I am not going to worry about this issue.
If I had known about the numbering - x or no x, I would have asked a better question. I asked the rep if they would reinspect when I come in for service the next time. He said yes and that satisfied me at that time. The truck is running fine.

 

I wonder the the recall date starts at the last time the tool was either replaced or inspected. Maybe the 25% number is if the tool chipped right after that date. Sort of worse case scenario.

Can anyone confirm that if you have the punch marks but no leaks they do or don’t replace the rack ?
I’ll be truly pissed off beyond belief if the punch marks confirm you had the bad machine but since it’s not leaking they won’t replace it. This is my understanding from one of the other posts.

 

Bought a frigging Toyota to avoid issues and dealers, now here I am with 700 miles worrying that my steering’s going to fail and kill me and the family. Fml

 

Not hard to drop the skid plate and poke an inspection mirror up there, then shine a flashlight on the mirror. Just need to know the number of punch marks to be looking for. The location would be ideal but likely not too hard to find em. The mirror detail already means they are on the top side, so that only leaves 50% of the rack body which is likely a casting and my guess is the punch marks will be near the mold ID number and or part number if it has one.

 

I think you might be jumping to a conclusion on that assumption. But hey, maybe I am totally wrong!
