Krex Coverage? What is that? Toyota should be picking up the towing since the part was recalled and failed. Since you had a power steering failure, make sure they replace everything, (Pump, rack and hoses) in case they were contaminated. Toyota should put you up in a loaner if you need one as well.

I was gonna hold off till I hit 5k. I'm only at 2700. Guess I should schedule mine.

What's KREX coverage? My 6mo service was beginning of this month, and the lady in service said I was good to wait since I hadn't gotten to 5k yet.

So at first, the person I spoke with at dealership was going over my records when I first called about power steering going out. Lady immediately said that I missed my first (6 month) maintenance with dealership and said I forfeited my KREX roadside coverage (I also was only at about 3000 miles so was holding out to do oil change and steering recall inspection soon). The KREX service is part of the first 2 years/20,000 mile complimentary oil/tire rotation/etc... -

"The Krex DriveSure program provides customers with value-added services that keep their vehicle operating at peak performance including Premium Roadside Assistance, Road Hazard Tire Protection, Emergency Rental Car Coverage, and a Limited Engine Lubrication Warranty." I said whatever and used my Triple AAA for the tow. They did however offer me a free rental, but declined as I have a corolla as my other ride.

They are replacing the pump, rack and hoses per my discussion with the lead tech. Truck was towed this past monday to dealership and they said truck should be ready before end of next week.

Well that's a load of steaming crap. Regardless of that Unicorn Fart platinum package you got the fact remains Toyota screwed up and your truck broke down because if it. Go after them for your towing bill and a rental.

Can anyone confirm the symptoms of the steering failure issue? I bought my brand new 2021 DC on Dec 30th 2021, they told me the recall was taken care of. Fast forward to Sunday and today, when I turn the wheel back and forth in the driveway it makes a racking/knock sound and occasionally when driving/turning left it is worse. Truck has 6100 miles on it. Local dealership looked up the VIN and said the recall was still shown as open against the truck, but the work history has the steering rack (or whatever it is) as being replaced, they said that was odd. When I was truck shopping this dealer told me they could sell me the truck since the recall was taken care of (I specifically asked because another local dealer I was shopping at could not sell another DC they had because of the recall). I think perhaps I got a second bad steering part!? I assume they’ll be able to tell right away hopefully by looking at some manufacturing mark, I hope.

Even if it's not under the recall, it should still be under warranty. Make sure they document the problem you're having, and request a rental while they fix it.

Do you happen to have a TRD skid plate up front? If so, this is a coming problem with the skid plate where it mounts to the crossmember.

Keep us posted on what they find.

100% agree with this. Make sure they do an alignment too if they replace any front end parts.

I'm wondering if they did change the rack and screwed it up somehow. Not proper torque maybe?

Imprint of that mark, i don’t see a stamp mark??
I took a video of what it’s doing but don’t think I can upload videos. Definitely not normal.

Recall or not you shot not be getting racking knocking sounds from the front end. Mine went out all of a sudden while doing lock to lock turns reversing into a parking stall. Seems like all the failures I've read about on here have been sudden failure with one happening while the guy was driving. They may have changed the rack out prior to you receiving it and did not install properly. Taking it to dealer as sooon as you can. Good luck!!

Can you find any parts that are loose? Are you going to have the dealer look at it?

Hopefully it’s not the rack and a quick fix. Keep us posted and good luck.

They said, ‘the steering rack bolts have poor tightening, tightened to specifications’.
I picked it up and the steering wheel is off just a bit, enough to notice when driving straight. If you hold the wheel straight it pulls to the left. So I took it back. I’m not sure if an alignment will fix that or if they’ll have to adjust something else.

Sounds weird to me. Did they specifically say which bolts? A real alignment should fix the steering wheel but don’t hold your breath they will be able to do it. It took my dealer numerous attempts and it’s still not 100% perfect but very close.

We’re you able to confirm it didn’t make any noise before you took it back?

Yes they verified the rack is okay in regards to the recall, it is a replacement rack. I turned the wheel full left and right in park without the noises and it was smooth as normal. I tried talking to them and these front desk guys never seem to be able to explain much. I was really nice to them, but it better be 100% back to normal tomorrow when I go pick it up. You would think they would have done an alignment afterwards.

Even if the wheel isn’t centered it should need ok for your trip. Hopefully it will be right but if not, make sure you hold them to making it right. We paid too much for these vehicles for them to get away with it.

Poor tightening eh? Now the steering wheel isn't centered. Something isn't right. Bushing worn maybe? I'd be asking for an extended warranty on anything they've touched.

Definitely ask for a specific location and description of what was loose and what they did to fix it.

I received the recall. When I went in for the first service they told me it didn't apply to my truck as I have not had the steering rack replaced. o_O

I asked why would they replace the rack on a new truck then recall the replacement.

There was a batch of racks that were produced with a flaw. They may have been issued out as replacement parts. It says this in the notice.

Picked it up today and wheel and alignment are good now. Don’t know what there is to tighten besides the tie-rod parts or if anything could have been damaged when it was loose.

I think it’s on the door sticker. I’ll go check in a few min to be sure.

Edit - It’s on this sticker. Mine was 02/18.

I forgot the dates on the recall, but if it’s between them then yes get it checked out. Better to take some time to get it checked than have a failure on the road.
