I was just notified by my Toyota dealer that my 2021 SR5 TRD was finally ready for me to take delivery of. I ordered & put money down on the truck late October 2021. The truck hit the rail receiving yard the 2nd week of November and was placed on the NHTSA imposed “stop sale” before the dealer could take possession. What really takes the cake is that my truck was NOT one of the one in four affected vehicles that needed to have the rack replaced. I’m happy they did not have to mess with my truck, but not thrilled that I had to wait over 5 months to find that out. Hopefully the truck won’t be adversely affected from sitting, without being moved or attended to throughout a winter in Minnesota. Also hoping that it has not become a mouse haven. We will see....

Gonna be worth the wait Jim!! Glad they didn’t have to replace the rack as that would have taken them even longer to get you the vehicle…

Just got a steering recall on my 19. Something about 151 or so bad parts and mine needed to be checked? Great, so they can’t associate a supplier part by vin? Have to check a bunch of vehicles to see? Not confidence building at all.

Did you have the rack changed in the last six months? If not you are good to go.

The recall is only for racks made August 2021 or later.

Ordered a 2021 TRD PRO to replace my 2014, it was built in October 7th 2021.

The truck was on hold at the railyard for the recall remedy starting late October 2021 and on March 2nd 2022 the rack was replaced at the railyard by Toyota prior to being released to the dealership.
I FINALLY picked up the truck yesterday Friday March 11th 2022, super excited to have it and really like the truck.
The next day, Today, March 12th 2022, with less than 50 miles on the odometer the driver side front differential axle seal is leaking gear oil all over the skid plate and driveway.

Have appointment at Toyota dealer to fix on Thursday.
Looks like from my inspection the Toyota QC guys who replaced the rack at the railyard prior to releasing it from the recall hold damaged the CV shaft oil seal when doing the rack replacement OR the oil seal was defective to begin with (not likely).
I am tempted to replace it myself ($13 part) to avoid more hands touching this brand new truck but I will make sure the master tech at the dealership takes good care of it.

Ruined my weekend...but what can you do. Those who have had the rack replaced might want to keep an eye out for this issue.

I just got my 2021 SR5 TRD on Tuesday the 8th of March, it was also held up at the rail head since late October. Because it sat unattended throughout the winter I convinced the dealer to sell me an 8 year bumper to bumper warranty at employee rates. Might be a waste of money on my part but I think the piece of mind will be worth the cost. Lots of electronics on the truck that I don’t completely understand. I can’t see any recent repair indicators underneath the front end so I may have been one of the 3 out of 4 “lucky ones” that had to wait 5 months just for an inspection with no repair needed. Thanks for the heads up on the wheel seal just in case I missed something. The dealer would not tell me if repairs were made or not. Enjoy your Tundra.

Dealership inspection was yesterday and not impacted. They also installed a DCM software update.

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys, the truck is worth dealing with these “minor” setbacks. Nothing like the rumble of the V8 and the amazing fox suspension! On a positive note the power steering is perfectly fine now haha

I did notice the power steering fluid is red now, they must do that to keep track of the trucks that had replacement? I don’t recall my 2014 fluid being red, rather it was the normal amber color.

I just got the recall in the mail too for my 2018. I’m not going to bother taking it in unless I develop a problem.

Since your truck is a 2018, it should be a simple inspection that shows no issues, unless you had the rack replaced in late 2021.
Even though it is a simple inspection, plan to be there for a minimum of 1 hour.

Then why even go? Have you had your rack replaced since aug 21? If not, you’re wasting your time. Reread the recall.

Nope not at all. Just find it funny that no one is able to read the notice.

So what if someone took their pre-21 truck in and they haven’t replaced the steering rack and it had a mark in the spot for replacement? Would they then demand a replacement?

Tomorrow I’m going to take my truck with led headlights to be checked for the halogen headlight recall. Even though it’s 18-21 MYs, I think everyone with an 07-17 should also have theirs checked.

Did you ever find out what that 2nd steering recall was about?

This recall just emphasizes the inability for the majority to COMPLETELY read and comprehend something.

Reminds me of the exercise in grade school.

Apparently Toyota started with a Service Campaign that turned into a full blown Recall and the numbers changed so multiple power steering recall numbers but not necessarily a separate issue is what the dealer told me when I took mine in - and I need to go back in to get the skid plate creak resolved for the third time…

Did you notice your call volume isn’t as loud as before After the DCM update? I can’t recall how loud mine was before, but now it seems low even on max volume.

Ahh, my 2021 TRD off-road double cab just had its power steering die at 3599 miles on the OD. I’m actually sitting in the truck waiting for tow truck. Went to reverse into a parking stall and hit full lock- felt steering kick back with a loud groan and lost power. Was able to finish parking. I’m completely stock so was able to fight the steering to finish parking

Yes it was under the recall, I was planning to schedule my first oil change and steering recall inspection this week since I'm burning some vacation days. What timing! Another thing that was lame was that since my first scheduled maintenance was due in April, but since I only had 2900 miles on it I decided to wait. Since I didn't do the service I lost my KREX coverage through toyota they wouldn't cover towing back to dealership. Luckily I had AAA and the tow truck company that they use here was actually adjacent to the parking lot my truck broke down in LOL! I'm glad I didn't jump the gun and installed a lift and bigger tires.
