I dropped mine off at 3:00 p.m. today to begin the replacement process. My service advisor told me to expect it by tomorrow early-mid afternoon.

Toyota/the dealership gave me a rental through Hertz.

I received my recall notice today for my 17'. Just burned through this thread to get the details, and I'm going to do the A/B dimple recon tomorrow. I already had my truck in 6 months ago for what felt like a skipping in the turning of the wheel. I did a vin check and there was no recall on my truck. The service manager said "I've never heard of any PS racks failing on a Tundra.". I had a worn out CB tierod and they blamed everything on that, but when I replaced it the problem was still present. I called the manager back to let him know the problem was still there. He is said, "That's impossible". I told him regardless of what he thought, it is still not normal. (Granted what I'm feeling is very minor feedback through my steering wheel, BUT I do feel it!). If my dimple is in B, I think I'm going to have a interesting conversation about how many PS racks are indeed failing, unbeknownst to his ignorance.
To his defense, he did say they would replace it if it was bad, but "only once" because I had larger tires.

Yes, very poorly written. I just got mine and I had to re-read it like 5 times slowly to make sense of it. He I was thinking that mines was under the recall and it’s only if I have had my rack changed.

Did you buy the truck new, and have you had the rack replaced on your truck since?

I bought it new, 39k miles, original rack. I've been having stuttering, skipping feedback both audible and tactile through the steering wheel. It comes and goes and it course it was not present when I had it looked at and they dismissed it due to not being able to replicate. It can be completely unrelated to what others are going through, and if inspected, it may pass if the feedback is absent again, but if it falls under the recall, I'll at least have peace of mind one way or another.

How exactly can it be under recall when the units that have failed are less than a year old? You're grasping at straws at the very least.

For anyone that fails and gets a new rack, check your alignment sheet before you leave and then take a test drive. I’ve been having issues with my steering wheel not being centered.

Took it back to the dealer and told them I wanted the steering wheel centered and the left caster .5 less than the right to compensate for road crown. I was expecting to be in and out within an hour. Didn’t happen though. 3 hours later they said it was perfect. I looked at the print out before I test drove it and they didn’t listen to me. The caster is still higher on the left. After a test drive the steering wheel is still off.
I went back in and talked to the manager and explained the issue. They had a “master tech” come out and said he could correct everything but he would need to finish what he was doing. They offered me a loaner for the few hour they needed, but I had my son pick us up to run errands. Get the call that it’s done. Look over the print out and they still didn’t listen, however the steering wheel is centered and the truck tracks straight from what I can tell. They said that when they put the rack on last week the steering shaft was off one tooth. I said “doesn’t it have a spline or key way it lines up with” and he said not ok Tundras.
I’ve wasted a lot of time on this and frustrated but it does drive straight and the wheel is centered. Will the current adjustment wear tires. If not, I may Just let it go. Note the times on the sheets below. The 1:03 is the latest.

Sorry to hear this. Since mine passed the rack punch inspection I got lucky. I'm still thinking of taking mine to my local Pa & Son non Toyota shop for an alignment. This guy asks so many questions about my driving style and loading I feel like a chair under a lightbulb in a dark room is next. But when he did my Element drove better and highway MPG increased by almost 2 MPG. Worth it just to know it's right.

How does a 2018 purchased in 2017 get in this recall? That is crazy

I have had to truck in for service BECAUSE of an issue with the rack long before any recall started. The recall that exists simply supports my previous issue that the racks are not impervious to failures. I'm not reaching for straws... I have an issue with my rack. Grasp that please.

But it’s not so much the rack failing, but a bad or uncalibrated machine between Aug 21-Oct 21 (dates might be off, but it’s close). Your 17 wouldn’t have anything to do with this issue. My rack went out in my 2010 years ago, but if it happened now I wouldn’t try to blame it on bad parts produced in 2021.

Keep in mind there may be multiple power steering recall issues going on so I’d say if you got a recall notice then you should probably take it in and not worry about what anyone else on here says about it…

Going in for my 5K service next week and they added the recall fix. 4.5 - 5 hours.

Hope they got all the parts to do the fix. Fingers crossed

Yes, it’s easy to check and see if your truck has a recall. However no one has mentioned anything other than the 2021 rack recall. Even the notices going out to everyone say only the 151 racks that were replaced after the 2021 machine issue fall under the recall.

Please let us know if you find out that there are multiple recalls going on.

    VIN check here:

I think what is trying to be conveyed is that your problem would not be part of this recall. You may well have an issue, and you may get it fixed under warranty, but it won't be because of this recall. Your truck doesn't have the parts that this recall is referencing. They are unrelated to whatever troubles you may be having.

There are at least 2 recalls going on (power steering) as when I took mine in for the ‘21 recall the Service Advisor asked which one…

I went there no recall for the Power Steering also not on Toyotas Site or the APP. I will be going in soon for my first oil change hopefully my rack is good.

My truck was held at the Port for a extra month supposedly for steering column issues.

I do have notification of a DCM Service Campaign which is new.

I just got a letter on this on my ‘20. 25k miles with a good chunk of offroad, no issues so far. I honestly haven’t read through the letter, not super concerned about it.

I can’t tell how many people are failing to understand this notice we’re all getting in the mail…

I got one. And it doesn’t apply to my truck in any way at all. If I enter my VIN on Toyota’s recalls page, I get a big fat 0 for my truck.

The letter states that if I replaced my steering rack—for some other reason—on or after Aug 5, 2021, then I should have it checked out. I did not, so no action necessary. Seems to me it’s just Toyota being overly cautious.

I agree the wording is very confusing, but the notice going out to just about everyone with a 2.5, me included refers to replacement racks that might have been compromised during the manufacturing process during a very specific time period. Being that you have a 21, pretty sure you might still need to go in to check the stamp marks on the rack itself to see if you are affected. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
