The dealer called me back and confirmed they can have the “Gear assembly “ I’m assuming rack within 2-5 days. If it needs the rest of the steering system parts, it will be a while as many are on back order. She also confirmed that while Toyota only says 2 days for a loaner on this Recall, if they are waiting on parts, they will cover the loaner until the truck is repaired. They confirmed they use Enterprise and will try to accommodate with a like vehicle. She also said they will accommodate a Saturday to inspect for the Recall. If it does fail, they will keep the truck.
I brought up Lemon Law, because of the serious situation which Toyota has not handled well. I love this truck and do not plan to get rid of it anytime soon.

Ya not enthused about leaving my truck at a dealership for X amount of days, if I have to I have to. I know they will give me something to drive while they have mine. My place does loaners and rents right there at the dealership problem is they do not have much for anything on their property?:) I am hoping I drive out of there, which is now changed for Friday morning after traffic.

Just got off the phone with my dealer, and my faith in Toyota is rapidly eroding. From a non-technical person on the other end, it appears that my marking is one of the bad ones, but we won't know for sure until they see it with their own eyes, which will be on Monday.

Once again, a BIG caveat, it was a non-technical person on the other end of the line, saying that the marking I believe I have was labeled as "requires replacement" (and who knows if the diagrams we have on this thread line up with what they were looking at). They won't make the call until they get eyes on it themselves.

The larger problem is the follow-on conversation:

Me: What happens if it is a bad rack as I'm driving in from two hours away on winter roads with much of the drive along a winding river canyon with a lot of steep drop-offs, as I doubt you want me driving my truck after its identified as having a bad rack?

Them: Oh no, if it's bad, you get your truck back, we order parts, and then call you to bring it back after the parts come in.

Me: You want me to do two more two-plus hour drives along the river canyon with a questionable steering rack?

    Them: That's what we do.

Sounds like I'm in for a long talk with the Manager.

I'm also 2 hours away from a dealership, I'll be raising hell if they don't send me in a loaner for a 350 mile round trip

Got that very same speech from the service guy at our dealership...drive it in 60 miles to have it looked at...if it's bad...drive it back home 60miles (good luck) and they'll call someday when they get the part in to fix it
make an appointment and it will be taken care of...

I will drive it home as I have a heated shop to store it in...rather than let it sit in the dealers lot for the rest of winter if that's what it takes...

Can hardly wait for our new 4Runner to show up...hopefully with good needle bearings in the front diff though...:)

On the bright side won't be putting many miles on the Pro in the salt this winter...

The 2021 Limited we also have was built in late 2020 no recalls and runs flawlessly (fingers crossed)...so that's nice.

Tried seeing if my salesman might be able to get any further with the service folks. Had sent him a pic of the pie with the machine mark. He had no idea what I was talking about, after explaining it further, this is what I got back:

Wanted to send back a note saying I'd be sure to think of that if I wind up in the river, but decided it just wasn't worth it.

If they let these trucks leave the lots they are taking a huge gamble if they determine the steering rack is a bad one.

Yep...all they gotta do is hold onto them and at the very worst pay us back at what we paid...then fix 'em up and put them on their lot with a $25,000 up charge...

So mine is coming home with me if I have to put it on a flat bed myself...;)

I bet I could get more for it off of Carvana as is then the dealer would buy it back from me for...
Of course if they could be forced into swapping me a 2022 Pro for mine even up
    then we'd have a deal...

Yeah I know "rots of ruck" wit dat!

    For the Record

Got my recall letter on saturday.
Still hadn't shown up on recall when i checked online(thought I was in the clear and it had been "inspected at port")
Took it in today, 2 hours later they told me I had the "good parts".
I asked the tech personally what the routine is on this recall. He said they take a picture and send it to Toyota and wait for a response.

    Mine was born 10-9-2021
Some sort of custom order longbed DC 4x4

I don't like the thought of disassembling the factory work up in the front ends of these new trucks.

I think it might be a whole lot easier to replace this on 2WDs, do they have to remove much to get at it?

If they have to, they have to, can't drive a tundra with no power steering.

    Pisses me off as well.

Yes, you will get the top tech, but there are levels to this stuff.
That shit needs to be done properly and ideally only once.

I do think their should be some sort of compensation for those that will need to be replaced.

Glad you had good parts but it’s a shame they can not do this on site,, waiting around two hours for a return phone is nonsense. That is about when they did my truck??

I think it could be a short visit.
I believe most of my time was spent waiting for the head tech to have time.

I looked in the bay after 1 hour and my truck wasn't even in there yet.

Probably takes the tech 5 minutes(once he knows the routine) and then he just sends it to toyota and waits for the good or bad news.

I was the first recall inspection for this dealer on a '21.

Last time my truck was at the dealer my truck was almost hit by an old man that should not be driving. I had to stop him from hitting my truck and guide him into the parking spot while the dealer just watched him. If I did not stop him, I am sure it would have been hit and a fight with the dealer to cover the repairs. I get in my truck to pull away and notice my 4wd is on. No reason they should have turned it on either. Unless it is absolutely necessary, I will not leave my truck with them. I know this could happen anywhere I park my truck which is the reason I park on the opposite end of the parking lots away from carts and other vehicles and willing to walk a distance just to keep my truck more safe. My dealer even offered to come pick it up and then deliver it to me, I laughed and said 'Thanks for the offer, but that's not happening"

Wonder if the dealer will cover my bed rack, cats, expensive wheels and tires if they get stolen as it sits at the dealers lot?

My 2021 tundra was built 8/21 and was just inspected by our local dealer. My truck is NOT one of the bad ones. Thank God. According to the pie chart earlier stated, my mark is in section D. So a mark in section D should be good to go. Good luck guys.

As much as I hate salespeople, would you go ask the service manager or technician about buying a new car?

Salesmen barely know about selling car let alone the service aspect.

If you need a rack, you get a vehicle to drive until it's done.

I didn't even pay attention. And for that matter, it could be in what was the 'bad location' previously. This rack was made after that assembly issue was resolved. We had another in stock, ripping the old one out now.

True enough. Difficult to say the date they figured out the machining issue and how Toyota determined what may be a pass or fail.
Be an interesting project for someone to say the least.
Just off the phone with the local service dept and was told this should take approx two hours including the emails.

Thankless job you have there. Every day my brother is cursing stuff going sideways wrenching on new out the box and completely beat to crap motorcycles and quads.
Being a mechanic and "service" guy you wear all the shit.

I am go in tomorrow morning and hopefully they will let me back there. They have always in the past when I wanted to snap pictures so we will see. My letter states certain 2007-2021 TUNDRA (14 years) !!! certain 2008, 2010-2015, 2017, 2019, 2021-2022 model year Sequoia. So the dull piece of equipment part probably isn’t the right thing neither.

I'd already been through the service folks, twice, to no avail, so thought maybe my salesman might be able to give them little push. His ignorance and attitude were all the more surprising since I know he also has a Tundra that is listed under this recall.
