I shot my day's limit in dusky with my bow on the last day of archery elk. Not quite the meat I was looking to put in the freezer, but fun to shoot nonetheless.

True. I've had my share of bad hits & never recovered the deer. It's horrible. But we're not talking about people who make an honest mistake that they wish they could take back. We're using this hit as an example of schmucks who actually are reckless & don't give a damn about the animal. Whether or not this particular incident is an accident or negligence, we'll never know. But these killers (not hunters) are out there regardless. If you ever see one in action - report it! If anyone reading this actually is one, cut it out! You're being a selfish, unsympathetic psychopath towards a beautiful animal. Grow up.

I must say though - that picture is impressive Tim...how the broadhead managed to punch right through that main beam & didn't just deflect off. I bet it made that deer's head spin. It's crazy how tough whitetails are. They always amaze me.

72yds and a follow up connection at 90yds…both further than what I would have preferred, but I regularly practice out to 110 so I was confident in my range (was shooting daily all August, and 2-3x a week since March). He was bedded slightly down from me with about 6 cows and the wind shifted as I was trying to reduce distance for a closer shot. My 72yd shot is visible in the 2nd pic-fatal shot; my 90 passed through at the bottom of his chest and grazed his left front leg on exit. He was bedded facing East when I first shot and he did a 180 and stood broadside ~20 yards further out facing West for a few seconds, so I knocked another arrow and dialed to 90.

It was an incredible hunt. Had near opportunities at 35 and 40 yards on other bulls/different days, but they were both obstructed and resulted in no shot. Was on a nice 7x7 twice out to 120 yards, but couldn’t close distance any further. Also called in a 5x6 for my brother-in-law that he successfully took at 30yds.

Thanks! Definitely was…as a general disclaimer, I don’t advocate for long distance bow hunting shots…most everything I’ve hunted before has been inside 40 yards. The limited opportunity window I had with the wind shift and him being bedded broadside, along with extensive practice/confidence in my setup, is the only reason I took a 72 yard shot. Given the preference, I always try as best as possible to close as much distance as I can.

:fistbump: personally I wouldn't shoot past 60 yards. But I have a 20+ year old bow and don't practice as much as I should. I feel really confident 40 and under.

Posted this in another thread as well, but I guess I'll share in the proper thread.

Shot my first whitetail on opener and a turkey the next weekend. Both taken with a bow. I'm absolutely jazzed about the whitetail, he's the buck I always dreamed of taking. He's currently the record for my families land (Northern WI), green scored a 151". He beat out my dad's buck from 2 years ago who green scored 146" (now I have a target on my back hahaha!). Great start to the season!

Thank you, I appreciate the kind words. Very happy hunter here, going to be a tough hunting season to follow up! I definitely understand how fortunate I am to take down this stud. The first thing my dad said when he walked up to me and the deer was "a lot of people spend their whole life hunting deer and never see a whitetail this big, never mind shoot one". That statement hit home.

I've had the hunting bug since I was a little tike. I was chasing my dad through the northern woods of WI since I was 5 years old. I've been hunting since it was legal for me to hold a firearm. The stars and the moons somehow never aligned on a whitetail (even though I've been in the stand damn near every year trying to get one). I have plenty of other North American Big Game animals under my belt, now I just have the one that eluded me for 10+ years! Now the freezer is full, the best part of the whole deal.

So you're not a new hunter...sorry. Your dad is right! I've only seen one buck on the hoof that might be about that big in over 30 years of hunting. Unfortunately it was during doe season. Way to keep it together & make a good shot...no doubt your heart was pounding.

No worries. Most people don't spend a quarter of their life trying to shoot a whitetail

Heart was pounding. I actually sat for 2-3 minutes and let him feed while I let the adrenaline burn off before I let the arrow fly. Spent the summer shooting (about 1,500 arrows), so it was great having all the practice pay off.
