Started filling up the freezer. Two decent does from the other morning. Spent the rest of the day processing, something very relaxing about it.

Nice job on the harvest. Young Doe meat is always tender and tasty. I put up another stand yesterday, prepping for January Bow hunts. The Bucks are there, just not when I’m there. Hopefully I’ll be showing one in the back of my Tundra soon.

Some young buck's from my lease in the Mexico brush country in Nuevo Leon. The young'uns are chasing, rubbing and scraping right now, but the old buck's haven't showed yet. Hopefully rut will be in full swing later next week when I go back.20201222_175746.jpg

Spotted this group of about 20 Axis deer last week on a ranch property. The largest Buck was very impressive! 62299A16-2BAC-40F3-8998-C77149C1097B.jpg

I've honestly never heard of axis deer before, had to search it. They look like a whitetail with a hybrid whitetail/elk rack! That's crazy.

Yeah they are pretty cool looking for sure. I'm sure they are only found on private ranches in Texas that offer exotic hunting opportunities. Unless some have escaped the high fence life and made it to public land.

You can see Axis deer very often in residential subdivisions around my area. They’re more prevalent in the hill country areas though. That ranch land in the photo is not high fenced and the deer room into surrounding residential neighborhoods.

Just like this buck that sits outside my buddy’s home each week.

My old hunting lease in Junction, TX was lousy with axis deer. They are some fine eatiing! They would mostly follow the river bottoms at first... but they would migrate to the corn feeders almost 5 miles from the river at times. I go on a hunt in Leakey, Tx every year now targeting them just for the meat.

Interesting, thanks for the info. So can you hunt Axis on public land with an OTC license? Or is it restricted in some way? I've never tried to head to Texas for an Axis deer because I didn't want to pay for private land hunts...

They are a non-game regulated species in Texas and you can shoot them any month of the year. There are some ranches that charge to hunt them. But it is open season on axis deer year round if you can find land to hunt them on. No deer tag necessary as a resident. You may have to purchase a non-resident license, I just don't know for sure. I can hook you up with a guy who specialize's in these hunts. Cost is about $250/ axis deer.
