A hunt I will never forget. Piebald deer I had pics of for a few months but never in daylight. Finally she slipped up and came out after a little snow storm.

Anyone going to apply for any out of state hunts? I'm going to apply for NM elk and Utah elk. Also going to apply for points in WY for antelope next year.

For someone who doesn't hunt, I get the killing of deer, hogs, turkeys etc to eat, but why bears and cats? Is there money to be made from them or is it soley for sport?

    Asking for a friend.

Best answer I can give as a hunter, but not into bear hunting.

    Conservation.

Bears and cats are predators, so hunting them keeps the balance with animal population. As soon as the bear and cat population get out of control, deer/moose and other type animals population will decrease. For example, I believe British Columbia is considering banning Grizzly hunting. This would not only impact population of deer and moose, but hurts the economy as well. This is a good article of what happens when you stop hunting bears..

    https://vancouversun.com/news/local...ion-suit-against-b-c-ban-on-grizzly-bear-hunt

In addition, hunting older males who cant reproduce as effectively as younger males will help increase population. Older males that are not hunted will push younger males off of sows that are in heat, which could hurt population.
You can eat bear and mt. Lion as well. Many people that I know who have hunted both, enjoy the meat from both.

Again I have not hunted bears or mt. lions...am I against it? No. Just not my thing. I'm 100% for conservation and I understand why there is a necessity for bear and cat season.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I didn't think of it like that, but is it still necessary? Maybe as I was born and raised in Britain I'm a little out of touch with it.

Where bear hunting and cat hunting is allowed it is necessary. Each tag and hunting license that is bought from resident and non-resident goes to the Fish and game for each state, as well as other things like the upkeep of public lands. Fish and Game officers have to do a yearly survey of animals within their "district" to dictate what the tag numbers will be the following year. Here is a good article from here in Michigan that talks about what the money from hunting license does for the state.

    https://www.freep.com/story/news/lo...-hunting-big-decline-deer-fishing/1924497002/

My point is, if there is a season for bear and cats, there are trained professionals that have put boots on the ground and know the population enough to see a season is necessary.

Not a problem! If you get the chance I definitely recommend going on a hunt, it will be an experience you won't forget. As long as you go with someone that knows what they are doing!

Will do sir! Last year I was successful in Unit 51 for the second rifle season. I'm hoping to pull tag in the same area but earlier season! What do you think?

Im an avid bow hunter, and hunt deer, elk, wild hog, turkey and my favorite BEAR. The guys above are correct in their assessment regarding conservation, its a tool regulated by each State or Province based on science data (regarding tags issued). That said, bear and cougar are some of the finest meat one can hope to eat. Both need to be cooked through (not rare/pink like deer/elk) due to trichinosis. Cougar is a "white" type of meat and tastes great. Bear is a bit sweeter and a bit stringy, but the taste is comparable to beef, its mild and quite good. Personally I see a difference in spring vs fall bear meat. Those are the 2 seasons which you can hunt bear depending on the specific State or Province. Fall bear meat is superior IMO especially if they bears are eating berries and nuts in the fall. The spring bears are coming out of hibernation and the fat is used up - and IMO the meat doesn't taste as good. One last thing - - BEAR FAT. Start cutting it out and using it. It is superb as a cooking oil, (you need to render it). Google the best pie crusts, 5 star chef pie crust etc. The best pie crust made by the best chefs in the world use bear fat (as lard) in the crust. I could go on and on PADJ, but suffice to say I respect you for asking the question to hunters as opposed to getting any info from the anti-hunting folks who are clueless.
