I think we have to hold our judgement on this one until we find out the real cause. The few that have had issues post replacement seem to have been wiring harness related. Let’s hope it’s the same here. But yes, you’d think they’re the same engines, but I believe they spun up a new line dedicated to producing recall engines. I’d hope the procedures on that line carried over to the main lines.

I called today and the service manager misquoted the service person and told me the catalytic converter had been damaged. Toyota Corp left a message on my phone that the torque converter was the problem and they were about 10 days away from getting one in to the shop. Torque converter makes much more sense than the cat converter.

That's reassuring. Haha! That does make sense. They aren't going to send all those blocks to recycling. Pretty sure they jb weld the drilled holes and just stick them in new frames!

The old blocks are sent to a scrapping facility. I want to say it was NotRyan who posted the recall procedure with the instructions and return address for the blocks. It was a scrap yard.

I did the Tour De Tucson bike ride back in the day, got to see the perimeter of the entire city very briefly and not terribly impressed. The arid terrain is such a change from our east coast forests and such... but I guess you get used to it... and no mowing the grass! That Vail area looks pretty nice and the housing prices look attractive, especially for a winter home. What is the water situation there? I also need to see what the recreational picture is like. I am trying to figure out my next steps between FL beach or maybe staying local... or something else altogether. But I feel I need to get away from winters somehow even though they haven't been all that bad here lately. Certainly not as bad as Chicago.

Anyone did engine swap in houston or surrounding areas, or have any recommendation on which dealership should I take my truck in for it? Mine 2022 will be done next phase, so I just want to avoid as much future problems as possible. Thanks.

Well, just got the call from the dealer. They got my engine in yesterday, and I'm dropping her off Monday morning. Took about 8 business days or so for them to get the engine in after they ordered it. The lady I spoke to said the process should take about 2 or 3 days.

On a side note, I wish I could hang out and watch them swap it out. Seems like it would be sort of a cool thing to observe

After much anticipation I dropped my truck off for the engine replacement on Wednesday and picked it up this morning.
    Year: 2022 DC Limited
    Miles on truck: 29889
Issues prior to Transplant: Nothing more than the normal recalls we all have had.
Dealer: Corwin Toyota in Colorado Springs
Test miles by tech: (Trevor) 8
Serial numbers of new engine: No
Service advisor on break in: (Richard, Old School and Well seasoned like me. 500 miles then every 5000 miles. With summer almost here I tow a 6k lb camper and usually change the oil at 3500 to 4500 miles depending how far we go on a given trip.
I had a 150 mile loop planned up into the mountains close by where I could very the speeds. Checked all the fluids again after getting home and all is well.
The truck went in clean and was returned the same way. I have service work done there before and have had nothing but great experiences.

    Update report

On April 23rd, I got my Tundra back and the next day took it on a short road trip to visit a friend in Poulsbo, WA. His house is about 535 miles away so after I arrived, I did an oil change at a local dealership in Silverdale, WA. The service rep looked up my truck and asked if I knew about the engine recall. Since it was just completed the day before, we figured it was paperwork lag. He said he'll have his crew look for anything unusual like odd leaks or loose items. After the service, he reported everything looked fine. Unfortunately I had forgotten about getting the oil tested so nothing to report there.

After that short trip, I left for a longer road trip on April 28th thru May 8th. Drove to Champaign, IL thru Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, and Iowa. Stayed there for a few days with plans to hop over to Indiana and Kentucky to visit the Indy 500 Museum and Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory. Sadly the timing didn't work for me on that particular weekend. Louisville had their Kentucky Derby while torrential rains and road construction projects delayed my arrival in Indianapolis to arrive 30 minutes before closing.

Despite those plans falling thru, I did have an awesome time with my buddy, who I haven't seen in 20 years. His wife commented that it looks like we haven't hung out for a week rather than 2 decades. Despite not seeing each other in person for so long, we did keep in touch by phone, email and even the old timey hand written letter now and then. I also got to know and play with his 2 dogs, a German Shep and a Belgium Malinois. They were a bit wary at first but warmed up after giving them snacks and lots of lovin'. I used to have a Shep a long time ago so I was a very happy camper. Now I want to adopt a Shep again.

Anyhow, my return trip home went on a southern route thru Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and Utah. Originally I was going to drive from Denver, CO to Provo, UT thru the Rockies but a late spring/early summer storm dumped a lot of snow on the 2 routes I was looking at. I ended up going thru Wyoming to reach Utah. From Provo to home was very windy but uneventful.

My truck now has a bit over 35K miles, 5K on the new engine. I don't have any road trips for the rest of the month so I'll take it in for another oil change and inspection next week. I'll ask the service rep about an oil analysis service and get the oil tested. As for performance, as reported before, the acceleration lag is gone and hasn't returned. What was a nice surprise was the improved gas mileage. The old engine would average 20 mpg on highways but now I was able to hit 25.4 mpg on flat lands while going 70-75 mph. In mountainous/hilly areas, it dropped to 20 mpg but still an improvement from the old 17-18 mpg. When I go on long trips I tend to use 91 or 92 octane rated gas while sticking with 87 locally.

On a side note, a new gas station near my house has 87 rated ethanol free gas and that one gives me 22 mpg locally. I tried to do a long run with pure gas only but not all gas stations along my path carried it. I'll probably experiment with pure gas after I map out the locations of gas stations that carry pure gas at a later time.

600 miles on new engine - so far no problems. Rough idle is improved. I have noticed a little bit overall louder engine noise at start up. MPG roughly the same so far +.4. They also replaced my pads, rotors, and shim kit as part of a separate “recall” and my drivers side seat trim panel. They evenly plugged a nail hole in my tire from the job site. Only thing I had trouble with was fighting toyota for the seat panel replacement. I appreciated getting the video updates, seeing the crate, and getting the peace of mind it was being done correctly behind the garage doors.

Quick bump, as I also have over 700 mile son the new engine now, and I gotta say with confidence that my average MPG has went up by "1" vs the old one.
Don't drive any differently/etc than before, and wanted to give it enough time to stabilize.

14.8 average MPG now, vs 13.7 before (rollin' on 35s, b4 anyone asks).

Got my engine swapped last week, 22 limited with TRD off road pkg. double cab bought it used at 3k miles
    59,700 miles, build date 2/22
Dan Deery Toyota in Cedar Falls, Iowa
Currently put around 400 miles on it, runs smoother, I noticed on the interstate it runs 200 rpm less than previous engine at 85 mph now runs at 1800 rpm, I run with the TRD air filters, so in general my sentiment is inline with what everyone else is saying, glad I did it.

Are they pulling the engine out the front or pulling the cab off? For those of us who have run our own wires (power, ham radio cable etc) from the cab to the bed would be good to know so could pull out those wires if it's cab-off. Thanks.

For me I don't know, dropped it off on a weekend and they did their thing called me when it was ready. I guess you'd have to ask your dealer what their protocol is.

And, I have an aftermarket CAT shield installed. Should I remove that before taking it in? It's not hard to remove, just don't want to introduce anything out of the normal that could get lost or messed up. Thanks again.

Mine was a "cab off the frame" engine replacement job.
While I have a lot of AUX wiring in the truck, I only have a single wire pair run from the cab to the bed. I added a deutsch connector, between the cab and bed, and disconnected it before leaving the truck @ the dealership (I marked the AUX wiring connectors with orange marking tape for them, just in case).
Disconnected and marked my light bar and AUX fogs as well (as the front end comes off the truck completely too).

It might be a good idea to stop by the dealership beforehand, ask for the tech who's going to be doing the job to come out and take a look at everything, explain and show off your aftermarket crap, and ask what needs to be removed and/or disconnected - this is what I did.
Nothing got destroyed or cut/etc on my truck, and the were appreciative of my "prep work" ahead of them digging into it.

From what I’ve seen it seems like front end stays on for hoisting motor out. Would make cab off even more cumbersome if front end also had to be removed.

It shouldn't be doing that, unless you had your gear ratios changed.

I'm betting it's because the truck went to 10th gear.
