Popping Noise in Front End

I have this. It’s so the plate can fit around the diff drop. Only thing I don’t like is that the TRD skid plate comes with a box spacer for the jackpoint but this kit does not so it seems the plate can’t be used a jack point anymore.

 

Did you also have to pick up a couple of longer bolts?

 

Mine came with everything.

 

The attached review is what I was hoping to avoid, and happy to hear you didn't have any issues. I knew when I installed the plate there was 0 wiggle room, & was wishing then that I had some spacers. Guess I better get my order in

 

do you have just the front skid or all the way to transfer skid?

 

I had the popping for the first time this week. I cut rubber squares and put them on both side of the rear spacers as well as under the shins above the cross member. Torqued to 38 ft/lbs and noise is completely gone.

 

could you draw an illustration exactly where you put it. So you only have front engine skid?

Both front and transfer skids (only 2 plates at the time these were purchased).

 

So I have a diff drop so I have longer spacers between the frame and the skid plate so this is where I placed rubber squares to fix the pop. I can’t remember if the stock spacers let the skid plate touch the frame but if it does then you need rubber between the plate and the frame as well. I used one of those rubber flaps that covers the space in the front wheel well. I upgraded mine a while ago so i had the old ones lying around. Works like a charm. I have a few left so if you want to pay shipping I’ll ship one to you. I also included a drawing of how I cut the pieces.

 

rear skid plate bolts should be torqued to 38ft/lbs.

 

I’ve been driving my truck around and the silence is amazing. That popping really takes the fun out of things. Nothing like pulling into a parking space and having your truck pop a few times just to have everyone turn their heads and look at you like your riding in a hoopty

 

Thanks for the illustrations. The noise was bugging me and only came after a 3 hour offroad trip that I was flying through which I normally don’t, but I just wanted to be home haha. So all I could find was felt pads that help chairs n tables from sliding. So I went to the crossmember where the skid plate meets the trans skid and shimmed that. And I was so amazed that it was that. Now I’m back in love with my truck. Felt accomplished that day so I fixed my driver side lean with a 1/4” plate and even that went smooth. Just waiting in alignment. This forum rocks

All I can say is "Holy creaking pop Batman". I have been putting up with this noise since I bought this truck. The dealership said they could not find anything wrong. Took your advice, loosened the rear skid plate bolts, slid in some 1/8 inch thick heavy rubber shims, and presto, problem solved. Seriously, I have never heard this suspension so quiet. THANK YOU.

 

PMR, the starter of this thread….. thank you!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve been bitching about that noise for a long time…. People mentioned tightening the TRD skid plate, which was tight. I just added rubber as mentioned and took it for a dirt road spin… nothing!!!!! If your ever in southern NH, I’ll owe you a beer!!! Thanks again!!!

 

Is this only with the TRD skid plate or has anyone had this strange popping happen with the regular SR5 plate?

 

This just got resolved on my 2022 TRD pro. Thank you for the thread. I will pass it along to the 22+ crew.

 

Turns out this remedy using the homemade rubber bushings is only temporary, the popping sound WILL return. The reason it returns is because the skid plate is not actually popping where we put those rubber pads, bushings, whatever you used. The solution, remove your skid plate, yes PITA but you must remove it to see where the rubbing is taking place. Once removes it is quite obvious, you will see shiny spots inside the skid plate on the aluminum toward the rear mounting holes. I cleaned those areas with 80% alcohol, then used self-adhesive pads, the kind you use under heavy furniture. I cut the felt to the shape of the shiny rubbed marks and stuck it on. It's been several months now, driven in rain, and some off road, no noise whatsoever, totally silent. I feel certain it is fixed once and for all now. Or, until the felt pads wear out. The movement is so slight that I don't see the felt going away anytime soon. If you are happy with your fix, then let it ride. But, if the popping returns, take your skid plate off, guarantee you will see those shiny spots.

I put them under the washer to the bolts and between the skid plate and frame and now have Zero popping.

 

Hopefully your popping will not return. But if it does, take off your skid plate, you will see where the rubbing is occurring, it's very obvious.

 

OMG. Doing this tomorrow morning. If it fixes the noise I’m hearing I’m gonna be insanely stoked.
