So I recently took my truck to an off road park and this popping noise started.

    Let me back up first.
So my buddy swapped the passenger CV for me with a Napa CV since the OEM boot was MIA. I've seen him swap so many Toyota CVs that I took his word for it when he says I didn't lose enough fluid to bother removing the skid plate to top it off. The driver CV has a torn boot but it's still in ok shape so we didn't swap it out.

Fast forward to the off-road park.
My truck slipped out.ifn4hi about 3 or 4 times over the course of 11 miles off road and toward the end of them the front end started making this popping noise. I've determined it only happens at low speeds. So when braking and accelerating.

Anybody have any ideas? I'm hoping the torn CV boot just let in debris and needs the be swapped for a fresh CV, but I fear the problem may be with my diff. The new Napa CV is already surface rusting, while the OEM CV looks great minus the torn boot.

Does it do it all the time, like going straight? My boot has been torn a while but I dont have any popping, just broken cv noise when in 4wd.

The boot has been torn for a long time. It just started popping 2 weeks ago. It does it when going straight or turning at low speeds. Most prevelant when coming to a stop or turning but does it on acceleration as well.
I went thru some mud and water and I'm wondering if some shit got into that torn boot

I had torn boots for years and never had clicking or popping. Just had aftermarkets CV’s put on almost 2 years ago and no problems so far (should stayed OEM in retrospect). Shoulda kept the cores, but wasn’t thinking.

Sounds like you messed something up during your off road event. Driving through mud, water, and banging on rocks can mess stuff up fast.

Check your bushings and ball joints. Could be a dry bushing popping. Or could have a bad ball joint. make sure the cv is seated in the shaft right to that could explain the slipping.

Why is it coming out of 4wd?? Would that be an actuator issue or transfer case issue???

That's what I'm wondering and kinda throwing me for a loop. But I dont think the actuator would cause a popping. Maybe its randomly engaging and causing something to pop?

I already greased the upper BJ's. Need to buy a needle to grease the lowers. Maybe I'll fill the torn boot with grease and see if it gets any quieter :notsure:
Next thing I guess would be to drain and fill front diff and see if there's any carnage in there. But I'd like to wait until I'm ready to install the ECGS bushing. One other thing I'm wondering is whether or not the Napa CV had grease or not. It was assumed that it came greased out of the box.

    They come greased.

Coming out of 4wd is prob unrelated to popping noise
