Popping noise after turning on incline

that makes complete sense to me. But I'm more of a smart ass then just smart sooo.....

wow...yeah your tabs are completely 180 to mine. I've got an appt scheduled tomorrow morning with my mechanic. I described the issue over the phone and they told me they have a good idea what it is. I didn't get greedy and ask what their idea is...so suspense until tomorrow morning. I'll post more once I know more. Thanks for the help everyone.

 

I have a spacer leveling kit so mine is probably at a different setting because of that. not necessarily anything wrong with where yours is at that I know of. (Not a mechanic so these are mostly guesses) interested in the outcome. Did you look for rubbing on your coilover and swaybar?

 

I turned all the way to the left, then all the way to the right, but couldnt' see any potential for rubbing. No rubbing marks either. Bushings on sway bar look good. Boots look good/clean. Haven't raised front end, so couldn't check for movement.

 

i get a very similar popping noise. Found out i have bad lower control arm bushings and one bad lower ball joint. I will be replacing all this weekend. I'll let you know if my popping noise goes away, or if i still have it. If i do still have the noise i will be looking at coils and sway bar next. Food for thought

 

good to know. if it turns out i have bad bushings or ball joints, should I expect the factory 3 yr/36k warranty to cover it? i do nothing extreme in this truck...worse it sees is deer lease, and even then i've only needed 4wd once. nothing should be failing at 29k imo

 

My guess would be yes a warranty should cover something something as simple as bad bushings or ball joints but that's just my guess with out doing any research. Mostly because your bushings and ball joints should be just fine with such low miles on them.

 

Ran into a guy the other day that had put new shocks up front and was having popping noises. I looked under his truck and saw his alignment cams all bent and one of the cam tabs almost broken off. He took it to a different shop after taking lots of pics and had the original shop cover the tab for all repairs. Truck works great now. Keep us posted.........

 

Aren't those bolts post to be tightened to some ridiculous amount of foot pounds? I thought I remember something like 200 LOL

 

That is true, but I actually watched a video once that showed a guy torquing on the fixed adjustment bolt rather than the nut. Jacked up the whole mess........

 

UPDATE got back from the shop. inspected front end and couldn't find any issues. no play anywhere, and lca bushings were fine. they said cam tabs are fine, chewed up but within normal expectations. alignment machine showed caster was off slightly, right was too low. truck pulled to the right slightly, so we figured let's loosen the cam bolts up, adjust caster, then torque everything up real good. turns out the front bolts were "loose". more than hand tight, but def not to spec. I'll test it this evening in the driveway...keeping my fingers crossed.

 

UDPATE Alignment didnt work, truck still pops. Not sure what to do next, other than get the truck up and inspect myself. Have my 30k service coming up...I'll try to do it then. Probably won't find anything, so I'll take it to the dealer to get the issue documented before warranty is up. Thanks for the help everyone.

 

So i replaced both lower control arms a cv axle all 4 ball joints both front bearings and both outer tie rod ends and 1 inner tie rod end. I'm letting you know all this because i have a very similar pop and even after replacing all the parts i just listed, i still have the pop noise. And my truck had a full alignment done on it.

I read in another forum that Toyota Camry's had a recall on their front struts because of a popping noise they made while turning the vehicle in a parking lot type situation.

I've narrowed the popping noise down to a few parts from most likely to least likely- Struts, sway bar, upper control arms.

On a side note i replaced the most critical components in the front end. So even if the noise does persist, at least you know its most likely not a threatening noise.

thanks for the info, and sorry to hear you still have the noise. it gets on my nerves big time.

how would you describe your noise? Mine is definitely a pop, but very metallic with a reverberation. there is absolutely NO thud, click, or knocking aspect. sounds like something that was flexed releasing from tension or something.

 

by the way, my truck will be going to the dealer soon for body work. i had a guy right on red right in front of me. then accused me of causing the accident. while it's there, i'm going to document the issue with toyota and hope they can investigate. will update this if i learn more.

If your alignment cams still look like the pics, then they are 180 deg. off. This will make it pop for sure, and the bolts are junk, need replaced, lower control arm bushing can also be damaged.

They still look like that (upside down from yours). I asked my mechanic specifically if the orientation mattered and he was adamant that it did not. Now I feel stupid for not having him correct this. Looking at your pics, it's obvious to me that my cam tabs are resting on the lower lip and aren't sitting flush against the control arm. bolt angle is probably screwed up, not perpendicular to control arm. is this why you think the bolt and bushings are probably bad?

 

It definitely matters. You need a good Toyota tech to get you fixed proper, don't take anything but a bill wherever you've been. Those bolts are super important, imagine one breaking etc., I would not drive it like that. Good luck.

 

i think i've been able to rule this out as a possibility. the noise only occurs after I turn, not during the turn. also, its only one pop, not repetitive. i posted a video above of a sound that is very similar to what i hear.
