Ok so why are you surprised when people average 16-17 mpg?

Today I drove 20 miles at 60mph one way and averaged 21 mpg. Drove back at 70 mph and got 17.

I don't own this Gen 3 Tundra but I feel like I have a pretty good idea now, the kind of mileage I would personally get with it, based on comments like this.
Much more helpful than 15 min staged Youtube videos. Thank You

FWIW I (personally) am not looking for how great the mileage can be if you drive it like a granny on a flat highway.
I want to know how bad it gets when you drive it like you don't care, because, when I use my truck the cargo I am carrying or towing, has the most value, and making it safe to the destination means more. That's the trucks value to me.

It is winter, cold and the change in fuel means MPG drop of 1-2 at least, and can double that with any idling to warm the truck.
But I agree, MPG difference of stock V8 vs stock turbo truck is not as much as I expected. I got 18-19 mpg on highway with my 2016 when I had stock size, S load tires. Real world we are talking 3-4 MPG improvement which is hard to swallow with the costs of the new trucks.

Don't you love it when the person who has zero experience with a 2022 Tundra feels he has the most expertise? I just filled up again and 21.4 mpg calculated (and that's a 4x4). Please go post your personal milage in the appropriate forum.

If I ever get the new Tundra, I will be more than happy if I get 15 to 18 out of it.

Idk about you but my stock 2014 doesn’t get 16 or 17 on the highway. Seems like a pretty good jump to me.

For me the issue isn’t the actual mpg the truck gets. It’s the fact that the advertised expectation has been false and that’s been true across the board. It’s rated at 18 city and 23 highway, with an approximate 20 mpg combined. My 2021 Silverado I averaged 20 mpg no matter how I drove it, which was expected based on rating. Vehicles I’ve had before it I averaged at least the combined rating. This Tundra hasn’t even gotten close to the mark. I have 2389 miles and every tank I’ve averaged 16.9 mpg. So it’s like ordering a Coca-Cola and getting Dr. Pepper but not realizing it until you take drink. Some folks will say oh it’ll get better as it “breaks in” or “loosens up”. Then others talk about winter fuel vs summer. Do those have a factor in some of this? Sure. But I’ve had the same average no matter the drive mode (eco or normal) or fuel type (87 octane and 90 octane ethanol free) so far. My hopes at this point are that by the time I hit 5k miles that the mpg will improve. Then it will be what it is.

agreed. I’m very happy with the mileage. It’s matching my Tacoma pretty well or beating it on highway mileage but twice the truck in about every way. My daily work commute is ridiculous and if you look at my to work and home drive it sucks. At about 11 mpg. But that’s extreme. I get about 35 mpg driving to work and 7 mpg driving home lol.

Driving in eco only helps when starting from a stop. When cruising it doesn’t matter what mode your in. But what I don’t understand is people say its rated at 19 combined but I only get 17!! In a different circumstance and a different drive you could get 19. When I look at epa rating and I see it says highway 22, then I go test that and get 22, I don’t see how I can complain.

You are getting 17 now. You will certainly get better during the summer.

these things make epa on the highway. Idk what they consider “city driving”

I know how the drives modes work but I was curious and I knew others might be as well. So why not.

I had the same conversation early this morning about what they define as city/highway. I don’t know and I haven’t looked it up to know yet. My daily commute is approximately 80 miles round trip. I do have some stops along the way but that’s my drive. I haven’t experienced a good highway drive besides the drive from the dealer home. Which was 45 continuous miles and I believe that specific drive cycle was 21.

Once again I love the truck and have no regrets. The mileage is literally my only complaint or nag so far. Heck it even spent two weeks in the shop for malfunctions and that went well.

Heck, I was getting a single digit MPG on my 3-mile daycare run the other day (21 Sequoia 4x4). I think you are doing just fine for winter driving.

ECO only helps with the HVAC and making the accel pedal tuning dull so it’s easier to accelerate gently. You’re not going to see any mpg gain by using it if you don’t change your driving style. The highway certification drive pattern is lower speed than what most people drive. If you drive 70-80 mph, you’re going to take a big fuel economy hit. Speed limit by me is 65 and I drive ~68 and see 21~22 mpg on the highway.

That’s going to rack up some serious mileage quick. I’m very lucky to put on 6 miles on a typical work day. Fuel mileage on those days are irrelevant. What matters to me is what I get when I drive for a few hours or more.

I've been looking at fuelly.com comparing realworld MPG for Sequoia, Tahoe, Expedition. Tahoe V8 and Sequoia V8 are the same. Expedition V6 turbo is 2mpg better easy, gets into 18-19mpg often. I'll stay with the old reliable V8.

Tahoe V8 before mods will get better fuel mileage with AFM. The choice you are making is that Toyota will give you 1-million mile powertrain that gets 13 mpg combined, and GM will give you a 150k-mile powertrain that gets 16.

13.8 l/100km = 17 mpg. Interesting. I get that around town. I get 21+ highway, but most of mine is ~60 mph (4x4, SR5, 2 people with additional payload ~100-200 lbs. And I don't drive like I did at 16 years old. I enjoy the journey and getting there 5 minutes faster is not important to me.

For reference, I believe buddy lives around Barrie, Ontario Canada and I'm not sure how he drives. Not sure if he put snows on it either.

Im not sure, I can’t tell from his vids if he has snows, but having lived in & around Barrie, I’d be surprised if he didn’t. But he is getting = or better than my current mileage so I’m happy to see! 12.1 l/100 on the last 25km. 13.8 over 5 hr trip, works for me in winter!

407 miles in my dash says I'm getting around 19mpg. Hand calculated its more like 17.8. Mixture of highway and stop and go. I'm not unhappy with it. Do I wish it was 20? Meh sure. But its not the 14.75-15.1 I got in my 2017 Tundra.

Yeah, looked at Tahoe and Expedition before buying this Sequoia. They do more trickery to get the MPG up. Fixed front airdam is one and that won't work for me. I often have 16" of snow and ice chunks built up on my curb after the snowplow comes through. And going through gullies offroad, just no.

I’ve driven all kinds of speeds. I’m mostly 55-70. Some areas 60 will get you pushed into a wall around here. I’ve even tried using the stupid MPG meter as well, you know the pedal coach. Would I like more MPG, yes, am I accepting of my reality, yes. If it’s consistent at approximately 17 I’ll be fine. Summer time we’ll see if anything changes. By then I’ll have more miles on it.

Ok gotcha. So you could get better mileage but do to your driving situation it’s not possible to get epa numbers. Nothing wrong with that.
