At least once a day my 2018 5.7 rattles for 1-2 seconds when starting.

It sounds like a timing chain slap/rattle.

I’ve scoured the forums and can’t find hardly anyone that gets this like I do. My truck only has 19k miles and the oil has been changed every 5k.

    Does your 5.7 do this?

    Easy there killer. Deep breaths.

I did a search on this forum and found a total of one post that talks about this.

I’m not talking about the “diesel” idle sound that people always complain about.

Nothing on my 2016. Occasionally I hear the AC compressor kick in after the engine hits ignition... Thats it though.

My 2015 5.7l with 80k miles will get the timing chain slap occasionally when its cold out, less than 40 degrees F. Usually right at startup or twice this past winter maybe 5 minutes later during a low rpm situation guessing because the low oil pressure isn't enough for the weak/failing chain tensioner. Plan to bring it up to the Toyota dealer as I am still under the CPO drivetrain warranty when I get my trans fluid changed. Its definitely not the typical cam noise, it sounds like a metal slapping around. Found few threads around the internet about it. I guess there are four tensioners and the driver side primary is the one that goes and can be seen if you remove the oil fill spot from the valve covers. I have not done this yet but I have not had the issue since the temperatures are warmer now.

My first oil change when I got it I ran the Mobil 1 Advanced fuel economy, the last two were the extended performance, had the issue with both. Not sure if oil level will effect it as after about 7000 miles I will be around the bottom line on the dipstick and 1.5 quarts will bring it back to top. Did that once just to see and keep it topped off now. Know there is discrepancy on how much the engine holds but 8.5 to 9 on an oil/filter change will put mine at the top mark on the stick. Tried seafoam just before one oil change as I have had luck with it in the past and tried marvel oil just before my last past oil change to see if it helps, The seafoam did not and the marvel was just a couple weeks ago and the issue for me at least does not present itself in the warmer months. Not sure if there is a test the dealer can do but if I cant recreate it now I doubt they can help until it is cooler out and they can witness it.

Yes same here , I run 5w30 synthetic and no noises what so ever , My theory is the 0w20 is so thin that it drains out of the timing chain tensioners and makes them loose their prime of oil causing a couple seconds of noise on start up until the tensioners get oil pressure again .

Mine started a slight rattle after I got my catalytic converters replaced. Or I noticed it then anyway. Driver side bank cat sounds like it has an internal loose piece rattling inside. Only seems to do it at the high idle during a cold start. Although I can hear it slightly if I’m idling in gear beside a retaining wall or something with some echo. I’m highly annoyed of it :(

Not yet...I just did an oil change and put in Amsoil XL 0w-20 and the engine seems a bit more quiet but that could just be from the fresh oil. I don’t think the dealer I bought it from changed the oil before putting it on the lot.

I get it in my 5.7 2020 when it has sat for a few days. I guess the chain tensioner bleeds down.

I get it once or twice a year (The noise that is:rofl:). I have run Royal Purple 5W-20 since I bought it with 18K. I currently have 175K. I typically shut it off right away and never hear it on the restart.
