I stand by my remark. This guy has done this before and learned nothing. To me that’s the definition of idiot.

It's an old lake bed so it's almost a salt flat. Heavy mineral content and very corrosive to metals. :/

Still no real explanation how they did it. I didn't even consider how nasty the inside of their vehicles will get. I definitely wouldn't want to trash a $60K raptor like that.

    Wheels and tires. For now...
I’m glad to see they got him out. They got lucky they didn’t go out yesterday and decided to go out early this morning. We had a hard freeze last night (10-15F) and out there, I bet it was closer to zero if not in the negatives. The problem with this lake bed in particular to. Not a lot of locals talk about it and there isn’t signs stating what could happen due to the amount of entrances. BLM will probably fine him if they haven’t already. And he’ll spend years getting that crap out. I wonder how much damage was done in the underside. It’s been going through a freeze and thaw cycle every day since he got stuck. As far as him being an idiot.. I’ll keep that opinion to myself and everyone is entitled to there’s as well. I’ve got a habit of getting stuck myself when I had my Pathfinder when I first moved out here. Mistakes were made for sure. Whether or not he learns from them, well that’s up to him. Key thing is they got him out and no one was hurt from what I’m seeing. I definitely learned a lot from following this guy all week and it made me consider what I need to keep in Snow White (sorry I named my tundra haha)

Pretty sure George, NOR-CAL44, 775 Offroad and others involved have been a little busy last few hours given their latest posts and since some had to fly in and pulled an all nighter. George's and NOR-CAL 44 Facebook are continually updating but there never was a play by play by the groups or explanations. Perhaps as the day goes on comments will come out but one would have to actually follow via Faceslap !

I have the curiosity to go off roading with the tundra, and had the same curiosity with my 4runner. Two things kept me from doing it -
    1. Lack of knowledge and proper equipment
    2. Lack of funds to “fix” any mistakes I made during one of those trips

This could have turned out A LOT worse. And I am not going to call the kid an idiot - but it was irresponsible at best. Especially apparently considering this wasn’t his first time getting stuck to the point of needing rescue. To do this close to the holidays - have people give up their holiday time to come rescue you is not only irresponsible but in my opinion shows a lack of self awareness. Know your limitations, play out worst case scenario before you leave and have resources available to you if you somehow get stuck or in a jam. Not go out during the holiday week without knowledge of the terrain or adequate experience (basing this off of his previous reputation), get buried up to the doors and then have dozens of people give up time to help you. I sure hope this guy thanked and took care of all those people who took time out of their holiday to help him.

This: “You DON’T drive on it when it’s wet, partly because it ruins the lakebed, partly because it’s illegal, but also because it is super easy to get stuck in.” + this: “The worst possible time to get stuck on the lakebed is the beginning of winter when rain is on the way.” = me coming to the realization that the guy is in fact an idiot. And at least he admitted as much in his quote......I hope he learned his lesson and that he at least purchased new tow straps and weather tech floor liners for all rescuers

You think whoever was in it would have figured out about a half mile in it wasn’t a good idea to be out there. I guess it’s been out there since Monday supposedly. Out of Colorado.

It was difficult to keep people updated because of very limited phone service and everything was mud or ice. We all had to work fast before the sun came up and things started to melt.

We ended up using the Raptor with a 10k Smittybuilt winch, a 200ft cable winch extension. Parked the Raptor on 4 traction mats anchored to another Toyota pickup on 37"s I believe. We set a 2>1 back to a Pull Pal RA14000 land anchor. We used a 60" high lift jack to lift each corner of the 4RUNNER up to get traction mats under each tire. The jack required several layers of cribbing to avoid sinking into the mud.
Most of the time we were working in 6" if Icey mud With 4" of water then 1" of floating Ice. Definitely not awesome conditions!
We tried the first pull without the Pull Pal it was just dragging the Raptor and Toyota pickup. Setting the MA back to the Anchor was what we needed.
After getting the 4RUNNER out of the original position it still needed assistance for the next 200ft from the Raptor.
