Platinum side molding keeps breaking

This piece of side molding broke on the passenger rear door a couple of days after picking up my new truck. I waited for a new one to come into the dealer and had it replaced again only to have it break in the exact same spot the very next day. Now they are ordering a new one again to replace.

Has anyone had this problem? Is the dealer just installing this wrong? I've had issues with side molding (this issue and generally not being stuck well to the side) since day 1 and I don't want to keep going back to the dealer to get it fixed.

Mounting positions probably needed adjusted a little further apart from each other. Tech probably mounted the replacement in the same spot.

Also, with the door closed how’s the gap in between the doors? Is it uniform all the way around? Is about the same gap on the other doors as well?

um looks like they are using 2 front door pieces. usually the back door has either a gap or shaved leading edge to the front door so they dont actually bind when opening the front/rear door.

another thing i could think of, is he putting it on using the front of the rear door as the leading edge start point? on the toyota website it looks like the proper placement is using the angled part of the trim as the starting point at the back of the rear door as the starting point of attachment since it has an angled crease like this "\"

if you can take a pic of the front door leading edge (closer to engine) of the trim and the rear door trailing edge (closer to bed) trim placement.

It's hard to tell whether or not its uniform with the front because the piece is broken completely off now so I can't really compare it exactly. The driver side has never been an issue though, it's always been the passenger side.

For the install position it appears that the molding is installed from the angled part of the back door. The front door trim though is slightly raised where the doors meet due to not being secure (on order also from dealer) and it makes me wonder if that piece of the trim being raised is causing the rear door trim to catch it and pull it up, then break it off against the door. Maybe they need to replace both at the same time this time rather than trying to replace what they have in stock and waiting for the other piece.

only other thing i can think of is to use a baseline height point and take a pic and see if they are placed correctly on each side. could be the difference on how they are being mounted compared to each side as you said 1 side has no issue and the other is breaking trim.

looking at the new pics looks like the front trim is mounted a bit high in the door channel detent but it could be just the reflections making it look like it which in effect is skewing the mounting of the rear door trim. it sorta looks like the rear door end part is sitting really high in the door channel detent compared to the front door. sitting high (too make it look even with the front door trim) in the detent may be causing the person mounting the rear trim moving it too far forward and hitting the front trim when opening the door.

i am just speculating on giving you ideas to look for. hope it helps

I appreciate the replies. I can definitely measure to see if the height could be an issue. The next time I take it in they are replacing both the front and rear at the same time so hopefully it won't be an issue again. This last time they only did the rear since they didn't have the front in stock.

BIG BIG BIG favor to ask you, when they replace it, can you try to disassemble the old "platinum" insert inside the black housing? Usually there are a series of plastic welds/ rivet type deals you can bust off behind any adhesive tape. I am wondering if it is a 2 piece design- I want to black out my 1794 badges and it would be clutch to order the platinum black versions and swap the inserts. Thanks

I'll see if they will give me the old molding once they replace it and let you know. I don't mind if they are OK with giving it back to me.

They should let you keep it, or ask them if you can just look underneath the tape!

I have the same issue, part is ordered and the tech is replacing next week.
Didn't have any issues until it sat in the sun on a hot day, I think expanding it enough to hit each other when opening the rear door.

Even the truck doesn't like chrome.
It is trying to rid it self of the chrome.

I finally got my name on a Platinum. Is the black trim part separate from the grey "Platinum" part? I've always debadged my trucks in the past but since the molding is black it doesn't bother me as much. I was considering removing the black molding and leaving the Platinum if they're separate. Thanks!!

Same issue here. Had the truck 4 months. Already replaced front and rear door trim on both sides. Happened again and parts are on order to replace again.

This is my 3rd Tundra purchased new. I still have my 2007 5.7L double cab. Traded in a 2014 that I put 250k on. And I can honestly say that other than this cosmetic issue I absolutely love the truck. Have had not a single issue this far.

Is the longer, skinnier molding that is coming off separate from the "Platinum" badge?

There are 2 trim pieces. The “Platinum” name badge is a part of the trim piece on the front doors. I wish it wasn’t actually.

to the height question. maybe they are getting installed higher. here's mine. i don't have them breaking or bumping into each other but they are starting to lift very slightly each week. for the rear, look at the pointy part and compare where that sits in the shaded area compared to yours. mine pointy part is right in the middle of the shadow. yours is higher...at least best we can compare from pics. hth. good luck.

It does come apart into two pieces - the center "Platinum" piece does come off of the main piece, but not sure if it is in a way that would be useful for you. I saw your post too late - I ripped mine all off and tossed them in the dumpster. HAHA The Platinum bit just popped out as I was pealing the rest off.

I just picked up my Platinum last week and have 381 miles and am experiencing the same thing... Super frustrating but as you mentioned aside from this cosmetic issue absolutely love the truck just frustrating to drop this kind of coin. For those who have "debadged" their truck, what method did you use. I don't really care about the molding and am of the mindset of giving the dealer two options. Replace or remove all together. I don't want to be the one to have to remove the sticky residue from the paint and risk damaging the paint. I've attempted removing mounting tape on other vehicles and found it to be a royal pain in the @ss. If anyone has suggestions on how to do so could save me a trip to the dealer....IMG_9375.jpg

The dealer fixed it for me again and so far everything seems fine. I think the issue was the badge separation in general for all of the badging, not just the piece that broke. All of the Platinum badging was separating slightly from the body so the front piece seems to catch the rear piece just slightly in some cases when the rear door opens and shuts, causing the rear piece to snap. When I brought this in the first time they only replaced the rear piece that was broken because that front piece was not in stock so of course the same thing happened again within a day. This last time they ordered all 4 moldings and replaced them when I brought it in so they are all tight against the body now. Since doing that I haven't had an issue.

I just took delivery last night. I have been following this issue so I went right to the moldings on both sides of the truck. Sure enough same exact issue. Both sides lifting away from the doors. They have put a service ticket in and will replace. Hopefully it will not happen over and over.

I removed them all from my Platinum, just warmed them up with a heat gun and worked each piece off starting in the easiest place to lift. Most of double sided adhesive stayed on the trim. Rolled off anything that stuck to truck. They come off a lot easier on a new truck that if they have been in place for years.

Yep, ended up going that route. Didn't even need a heat gun just started with the side in the sun and then turned the truck around and hit the other side. Took braided fishing line to cut through the adhesive, pulled the plastic off, rolled any excess adhesive off, washed the area, hit with GooGone Automotive, and then washed and rinsed again. Would never know they were there. Was a little time consuming but by no means difficult.

Closest dealer to me is an hour a way and not a worthwhile use of my time to make the trip down for something as dumb as that. Just hard to not see the irony in the accents they added to make the truck appear "fancy" are the cheapest made (I hope anyway) thing on the entire truck.

Problem solved and having the truck say "Platinum" on the outside means literally nothing to me.
