I didn't plan on it when I left the house, or I would have taken a better camera. Went out and visited some dying mining towns yesterday. Samsung Galaxy S8+

Ok photography gurus, my wife bought me a Nikon D3200 about 6 or 7 years ago and I really want to learn how to use it. To be honest this last trip we did to Mt. Rushmore and Devils Tower also the SE corner of MT, got me interested again. Note to self SD cards are important to have.
    So all of that being said here are a few questions;
    It came with 2 lenses, a 18 to 55 and a 55 to 200.
When and what do I use the 18 to 55?
When and what do i use the 55 to 200?
What is the sun shade thing for and when do you use it. I think they are like rifle scopes but I also know there is more to it!
There is also a selection for different types of picture taking to make it easier for dummies like me, is it best to use these to make it simple?
    Aaaaand go.

Watch John Greengo's "Fundamentals of Digital Photography", he's updated it a few times. It's a lot of content, well organized with tons of his own instructional slides. I watched the first version years ago and covers all the basics, prevents/corrects bad habits (however, I've taken a bunch of courses before/after, and I do a lot of weddings on the side).

The 18-55 and the 55-200 are kit zooms, if you want to zoom further, use the 2nd one. Just google the specific lens and Flickr for the user group and posted pics using those lenses.

    Composition comes with practice:

It was something like negative 20 degrees and windy. Not sure how bad the wind was but it's sun dogs, or that's what we call them .The ice crystals in the air reflect the sunlight and form a Halo or just bright spots on the side of the sun.

From my vacation to the big island of Hawaii with my wife for her birthday. Taken from the plane (duh!) with my iPhone 6. I like how the clouds draw your eye to the volcano. Also thought the washboard clouds on top were cool! Wish I had washboard abs.

First day on Hawaii. Drove over to Rainbow Falls near Hilo. Took a longer exposure to soften the water. I had a polarizer on but don't think I needed it. I like this one.

Went to Volcanos National Park up to the Jaggar Museum to see the caldera. It's a lot cooler up there. The first is a pano I took with my phone. The second I liked the splash of red the flower added with the smoke from the lava lake in the backgound. These photos don't do justice to how big this area is.

    :(:(:(:(:(:(

I miss it but it also feels like a huge weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. Before I bought the Tundra my savings account was that of 2 years worth of the average American's salary.. I finally had a really serious conversation with myself about what I was getting out of that truck and if it was really worth the costs associated with it, or if perhaps I would get more out of something else for the same or less. For me the 4runner is a much better vehicle, although it lacks the straight up balls of the Tundra.

I hear ya on the cost side. If I hadn't of got the Tundra, the 4runner was 2nd on my list. For me it was actually the more logical one to pick, but then lust over took my brain at the dealer.

I haven't been shooting much lately. Scratch that. I haven't been shooting at all lately. Hoping to change that.

One Sunday morning not too long ago, Dillen and I took a hike in RMNP. Sun was out. Wind was howling. Beautiful morning to be out in the mountains. I packed light and took my Mamiya 645, a couple of backs, a couple of lenses, a couple of rolls of Ektar 100 and a roll of HP5.

Film still rules. There's a feel to it that digital will never come close to replicating. And, medium format, well, that's just the bees knees and extra icing on the cake.
