Early morning, south of Melbourne, in the hills near the Otway National Park. Such unbelievable country. Not a soul on the road. Just in me in a tin can rental trying to keep the wrong side being the right side.

That’s the beauty of Australia, not many people. A country a bit smaller then the US with the population of the NY Metro Area, about 25M people. Hopefully we can keep it that way

otway fly. this place was amazing and off the beaten path. glad i found it and glad that the guys i was working with told me to go. when i was there, there were two ways to hike it. down on the forest floor and up on the cat walk.

first thing you realize, is that you are very very small.

    Slavin_091113_4670.jpg

then you realize you're being watched

    Slavin_091113_4668.jpg

throughout the hike on the floor, they had life size, highly realistic dino models. most of the plant life originated in that time period and everything feels prehistoric. super cool but i was in no way expecting a pack of velociraptors. after the initial shock wore off, i went into full steve irwin mode and made a video to send back to bec and the kids.

after that, it was time to head up to the cat walk. it's about 100' off the forest floor but you aren't anywhere near the canopy. depending on which section you were in, there was still 25-40' of tree above. like i said, you're very very small here.

taking a peek at the web site, it looks like they've added a few things since i was there. zip lining through here would be super rad.

after a few hours wandering around, i jumped back in the car and continued south through the hills towards the sea. came across this sitting on the side of the road.

i've really got to figure out a way to get back down there.

Not really of the caliber of most of the photos in this thread but I thought it made for an interesting share- taken with my shit phone because I didn't have the real camera with me.

While putzing around the quarry today grabbing some GPS location points, I found where these small stones had rolled down the pile causing the real "snowball effect".
That's 3/4" crushed stone and the pile is about 20' tall.

They'll be gone by the time I get back with a real cam :(

needed a distraction this afternoon and wanted to try something. yay for self timers. pretty specific lighting style but it'd be fun for certain situations. plus, the snow sucks and i just watched a video clip of mtn biking in the mountains of northern japan...

Took our oldest for a hike in RMNP this morning. Snow, ice and temps in the teens here at the house. People sliding off the highway in Boulder. 20 degrees warmer and sunny up the park. A bit windy with some flurries but a very enjoyable morning out in the mountains.

So unbelievably nice to see her smiling. Takes away a little bit of the stress from the past couple of weeks. We aren't out of the woods with her yet but baby steps, day by day. She thoroughly enjoyed herself today. For me, in a way, these first two pictures kind of put it all in perspective.

Most of the ice is gone from the Lake Michigan Sturgeon Bay area, including the entrance to the ship canal:

The bay side still has ice but the Coast Guard began breaking operations this week.
