This Fall out my front porch. Not the greatest at taking photos. I used manual exposure. I should take a class in photography. DSC03776.jpg

Nice. Nothing better than last light on the peaks. Where?

Funny you should mention a class... https://www.tundras.com/threads/photography-education.16469/

Those are the Tetons, my wife and I live on a ranch with that view out our front door. That is a million dollar view.

Messed around with the exposure this morning, tired to get the Tetons in there natural light. Came out dark. I'll try again another morning. DSC03858.jpg

Actually, you pretty much nailed it. There are a few of ways to get a better exposure balance. The first would be to use a Neutral Density Gradient filter. Second would be to take mutiple exposures (one for the sky and one for the foreground/shadow area) then combine them digitally. Third, you could use a digital version of the grad filter. Lightroom had a tool specifically for that.

I'm never sure if I should put these here or in the trip reports. Since I started in this thread, I'll just keep them here since I'm including photographs.

Piper and I decided to get out with the cameras and see what we could find. It hasn't been snowing lately but the nights have been wicked cold. Means a lot of thaw/freeze cycles and that I had to find a trail that was mostly in the open and on a south facing slope. The Switzerland Trail starts just outside of Nederland and winds along the ridge to Gold Hill. Most of it is in the trees and on the north facing side of the mountain. Lots of shade which could mean ice on the trail. You can head up 4 Mile Canyon out of Boulder and skip most of the north facing stuff which is what we did today.

4 Mile is an interesting place. Always wonder about the people that live in that canyon. Little bits of history if you keep your eyes open.

    Slavin_180102_6078.jpg

Once you climb out of the canyon and get up on the ridge, the views really open up.

    Slavin_180102_6087.jpg

Piper was taking pictures along the way as well. We made a pit stop at the Mt Alto Picnic Area and she ran around a bit taking pictures of the old fireplace and chimney.

    Slavin_180102_6104.jpg

    Slavin_180102_6106.jpg

The picnic area is pretty much the end of the trail. You dump out on the county road that takes you into Gold Hill which is an interesting little community. Btw, if you're interested, the pie shop is for sale. As you come down out of Gold Hill, the road winds its way through the 4 Mile burn area. It's another planet.

    Slavin_180102_6117.jpg

Few more days of vacation and I'm in no way ready to go back to the day job. Going for an early morning hike tomorrow and back up to RMNP on Thursday. After that, I'll have another week or so at home then it's back on the road. San Jose, Milwaukee then possibly Charlotte.

yea, she's claimed that one as hers. she's also gravitated towards the 50/1.2 which she calls 'her' lens. same thing happened with the leica. like father, like daughter.

Early morning at Chautauqua. Left the house a bit before 6 and was standing on the trail just as the horizon started to glow.

    Slavin_180103_6122.jpg

The boot chains were still in the truck from my RMNP hike which was a good thing. If I hadn't had them, I would have needed ice skates.

    Slavin_180103_6125.jpg

I love coming up here first thing in the morning. Alone with the sunrise. It's quiet.

    Slavin_180103_6129.jpg

    Slavin_180103_6135.jpg

And, I never tire of the view from the top.

    Slavin_180103_6139.jpg

The arch is pretty cool too.

    Slavin_180103_6141-2.jpg

Then it's back at the bottom with one last view of the Flatirons.

    Slavin_180103_6143.jpg

    Ok, maybe two last views.

I need to get out and spend some time with my Sony A6000. Trying to use Lightroom less and let the camera and photographer do the work. Thats the goal for 2018.

Nothing crazy but a few of my favorite shots:

I had wanted to do it before going back to the day job next week. That was my original plan. Obviously, that's not going to happen. I'm in town for the next two weeks, then on the road for what looks like the 3 following that.

I've got a few places in mind for still shots but what I really want are motion shots. I know a few roads (paved and unpaved) where we might be able to pull it off.

Running around today. Picked up day job suits from the cleaners. Grabbed a new roll of paper from Denver Pro Photo for some headshot sessions I have on Sunday. Then Piper and I stopped at Cherry Creek Res. She likes to watch the guys at the model plane airfield fly their toys. Then she asked for a walk in the woods. So, we each grabbed a camera and went wandering.

She caught me doing the one thing that I very very rarely do. Chimping. She's getting sneaky. And faster.

    Slavin_180104_3383.jpg

Just a short walk through the wetlands. Not much really to see. Everything is so dry. I was generating static just walking along.
