you will never get the same DOF control with a phone as you will with a SLR.

i started this thread awhile back. i'll admit it fell off my radar a bit and i need to get back to continue. however, maybe you'll find some use in it.

a few from yesterday. this spot is not far from home and the trail isn't difficult. a short hike from the main lake takes you to two upper lakes. there are 3 more lakes further up but no defined trail that i know of which, of course, means i need to do some more exploring up here.

    lower lake:

tried my hand at a little light painting too. my fenix light is way too bright so probably need to use something else next time. the super bright spot above the cabin is mars.

I was up here this morning getting my kicks above treeline.

    Slavin_180916_5504.jpg

The rangers at the gate asked where I was headed. When I told them, they said to watch out for the SAR crew as there was an active rescue. About 30 min from the parking lot, I started seeing them on their way down and they were all smiles and good cheer. Figured it had been a good outcome so I gave them a wave and a 'good morning' and kept on my way.

Back at the parking lot, I asked one of the rangers if everyone had come out okay. Apparently a couple had gotten lost on Niwot Ridge yesterday afternoon and spent the night up there. Rescue ops started around 8pm and eventually a helicopter was flown in to pick them up. Didn't sound like there were any injuries, except exposure. The ranger was pretty baffled as to how someone could get lost up there. Me too. But, shit happens. Most of the ridge is above treeline and looks just like this picture. If you face north, and look down, several massive lakes are in view that are landmarks for the Brainard Rec Area. There's also the Sourdough Trail running north/south about 3/4 of a mile to the east of the ridgeline. I dunno. Like I said, shit happens. Glad it sounded like a happy ending for the hikers. Hope they learned something.

yea, the aspen blight is not good but they are really awesome trees. they are all connected. if you rub your hands on them to get the bark dust, you can use that as sunscreen and insect repellent. plus, they make for good tree skiing. :D

the bark beetle has destroyed so much up here. it's really sad. as far as i know, the only way to truly eradicate it is fire.
