Ha! At least you looked it up. Gold star. I have a bunch in the fridge but it's all medium format.

I've been using LR since it's inception 15 years ago. Single program for editing and cataloging. It covers 95% of what I need to do. The remaining bits are in Ps and mainly for final retouching in prepping high end prints or portraits/headshots.

Let me know if you have any questions.

We've had tornado like winds and rain the past couple days.

Had a good weekend - 897 miles, most of which was off pavement. Explored Toquerville Falls, Zion, and the western AZ/UT border.

    Ina4runnerdownINtheriver.jpg

After crossing into Arizona on some random trail, we headed west until we hit a graded road that went south/north, we turned north back toward our home state and eventually found a crossroads - left for Fort Pearce and right for dinosaur tracks. We went right and walked where dinosaurs once did. Was a really cool thing to stumble upon in the middle of the desert.

    Emalinasaurus!.jpg

We did eventually circle back to Fort Pearce. I looked it up once we were back in internetland, it was built in 1865 by the Mormons to fight off the Freemont Indians in the area. On our way down the canyon to walk along the river bed we found some petroglyphs.

Pretty fun day in the desert.

We we supposed to visit Zion, I reserved a campsite and we even set up camp on Wednesday night. Zion received 3" of rain in under 3 hours the first night we were there. My wife and I were ok with it, but my daughter was freaking out with the wind and the rain.. Every night thereafter extreme rains occurred around 9 pm. About 90% of Zion is closed right now to remove debris and repair damage to roads and trails. The first night we were there, still in the canyon, I really wanted to get pictures of the storm approaching from the north side of the park, but we were in such a hurry trying to get the tent set up and our gear taken care of that I didn't have time to get a few shots before the serious rain came. I went from bone dry to soaked through (skivvies included) in literally seconds once the rain started. We ended up retreating after a few hours in the tent, came back the following morning where we learned the park was mostly closed down. We were still able to take a walk along the Virgin River at the south side of the park for a few miles.

Forgot to attach the petroglyphs - the first image is from the canyon wall heading down to the riverbed near Fort Pearce. The second set of petroglyphs we randomly stumbled across after stopping to drive around on some dunes with a cool rock formation in the middle.. My son actually noticed these, I walked right past them.

took piper out to go see the milky way last night. we didn't venture too far out so there's still a little light pollution but it was pretty good viewing nonetheless. this isn't a type of photography i do very often but i might try to change that.

first, you need to find someplace dark. this map will help you. based on the map colors, last night we were in a light green zone. it was dark but there was still plenty of light coming up from denver. areas in dark green down into purples are best. gray areas are ideal.

we were able to see the milky way at about 10pm last night. you want to be well past nautical twilight.

for the camera, it's all manual. last night i was using a 35mm lens, ISO 1600, f/2.8 and a 20sec shutter. focus was also set manually, just under the infinity mark. the lonely speck site is a pretty good resource.

there's a little bit of post work to bring out the colors and the detail in the milky way. the way i shot this, the images were almost a full stop underexposed as i didn't want the clouds to get too bright and take over the image. so, i bumped the exposure in post, tweaked the white balance, a little noise reduction and a few other small tweaks.

I took this just outside of Scottsbluff NE at sunset 2 days ago. I'm glad the weather cooperated and it wasn't overcast like the previous 2 days.untitled-133.jpg

    @smslavin

Headed out on a mini vacation tomorrow. Quick question. My wife has a Nikon D500 and I was wondering if having the camera inside a vehicle during the day in 100 degree weather would damage the camera. We can't check into our hotel till afternoon and we plan on hitting a water park all day.

I'm sure it's not good for the camera but what I've read online says it'll be fine and hell no. Thanks in advance!

Nikon/Canon DSLR’s are pretty rugged, maybe put it in an insulated lunch bag out of direct sunlight such as in the trunk away from prying eyes. Remove the battery and take it with you so it’s not subjected to the heat. Li-on expands, that’s why capacitors are better for dashcams.
