Spent the last few days on White Rim Road - I haven't had a chance to go through all 600 pictures but here are some of my favorites so far. I really wanted to get more night shots but with big hikes in the heat every day it was rare I didn't pass out before it got too dark. =(

How about a collage from my recent RZR? These trails are right behind my house, about 6 miles out my back door.

Thanks Jack! It's easy to take great pictures in such an amazing place.. I'll leave a few more that have caught my eye the second time around.

    It's a swan!

    LooseyGoosey.jpg

The bugs at Potato Bottom were crazy, but the area was beautiful and green - an awesome oasis in the desert.

    TheEntsAreComing.jpg

One of the views from Fort Bottom Ruin - a pretty great hike with a scary bridge to cross along the way

From left to right: My sister in law, my bro, my boy, my lady, myself. Also at Fort Bottom Ruins. These are some 1000 year old Pueblo Indian ruins, basically just a cache that was probably used to store food and goods. The area offers a view in all directions and would be almost impossible to attack if defended. The hike out isn't bad until the rock bridge, which has a high pucker factor, and the ascent up the final mesa (My wife and son and I were fine, everyone else needed frequent breaks).

Planning another trip now! Anyone have any suggestions in Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, or Nevada?

Taken at Lee's Ferry AZ. Went fly fishing. Here's a nice rainbow I caught. It's catch and release so they all got away! The second is the Milky Way taken in Bryce.

When fishing got slow I took out the camera to keep me entertained. Tioga Peak (eastern Sierras) at sunset. First ISO 100, f8, 1/50 sec, 25mm. Second ISO 100, f4, 1/100 sec, 200mm

Thanks. I have realized I should bring my camera whenever I go out. Although I did forgot my tripod and spare batteries. :frusty: I'm a slow learner.

Took some time yesterday to reflect on 45 trips around the sun with a long quiet hike in RMNP. Got out early and sought out some of the lesser traveled areas of the park. Total bluebird day and I only came across a handful of people on the trail. Hope everyone had a good 4th.

a few more from yesterday. it's really hard to beat summer in the mountains unless, of course, it's winter. we had the place pretty much to ourselves and the weather stayed away until we got off the dirt. bonus, and just shy of 12,000', it was 25 degrees cooler from down in the city. might have to come back up here one night to photograph the milky way...

Great pics - what do you use for editing? Do you typically max out contrast and up the brightness dramatically for all landscape photography? It looks to me like the contrast is cranked all the way up in these.. Just curious about your methods.

lightroom. i have some presets that mimic some of my favorite film stocks. i shot velvia for years when i was submitting to surfer which is the preset i used here. when you nail the exposure on the slide film, the contrast is good and the blues and greens are pretty punchy. i also shot it slower than the rated speed but developed it normally which pushed the contrast just a bit more. for example, with velvia 50, i always shot it at 40 but developed it for 50. with the 100 film, i would shoot it at 80. i'll expose the same way with digital (about 1/3 under) to get as close as i can to replicating that feel. that means metering off the bluest part of the sky or using the dirt in the road or the palm of my hand. expose for the highlights, print for the shadows.

here's some of the info for the first photo in that post...

    basic.jpg tonecurve.jpg

    hsl.jpg color.jpg

the clarity does add contrast but i don't usually go beyond 30 or 35. portraits i keep between 10 to 15. landscapes and b&w go a little higher.

on the export, i have sharpening set to high.

I had to look up "velvia." Glad that I did. I have always used Photoshop, but I have the full Adobe Creative Cloud - I think I'll try playing around with Lightroom now. Thanks for the reponse!
