Go check out http://www.keh.com. Best used gear on the market. I pretty much buy everything from them.

The answer to this really depends on what sports. Indoors? Outdoors? Small t-ball field or a full size soccer field? What's not breaking the bank?

Right now on KEH, these would be worth grabbing...

    Canon 35-350, $1079
    Canon 70-200 2.8L IS $1035-1429
    Canon 70-300 4-5.6L IS $999-1079
    Canon 100-400 4.5-5.6L IS $822-1035
    Canon 70-200 4L IS $698-849
    Canon 70-300 4-5.6 IS II $432
    Canon 70-300 4-5.6 IS USM $228-289
    Canon 100-300 4-5.6 USM $84-126

Constant apertures are better then variable ones. L glass is better then non-L. You want to get the best glass you can afford. The camera body is nothing more than a light proof box. Image quality is dictated by the glass, not the body.

The best bang for your buck in that list would be the 70-200 f/4 L IS. All of the lenses in that list are decent. Some will require more work to get the shot than others.

Happy to answer more questions if you have them.

It'll mainly be outside with Football. I saw some at $1500 and was like ummm..that's a lot! HAHA
I am a totally amateur photographer. Since a coaching slot was not available, I need to occupy my time other than sitting in the stands.

This past week had me in Battle Creek, MI and Charlotte, NC. For those that don't know, Battle Creek is home to the company that gave birth to Tony the Tiger.

A few images from Battle Creek.

It was my first time in Charlotte and I only had one afternoon/evening to wander around. Lots of juxtapositions and filled with many physically beautiful people. Not sure why that caught me off guard but it did. I found more things to photograph than in Battle Creek. Partly demographics. Partly size. There is something about small towns that intrigues me but to find a story would require more than the couple of days I usually have in a place.

I dig black and white, but I don't quite have the hang of post processing yet. :)

The trick is learning to see in black & white and figuring out what to meter for to get a good b&w. Once you do that, you'll start understanding what certain colors and tones will do. If you have an old film camera lying around, burn a few rolls, try some filters (red, yellow, green) and see what happens. Then you take that and apply in Lightroom.

Contrast in post is my Achilles heel. I always go too far one way or the other. :)

    Practice. Patience. Monitor calibration.

Instead of the contrast slider, start using the tone curve and the HSL sliders. You can be way more subtle and the HSL sliders mimic what a colored filter would have done for film.

The first this you need to learn is a good technique with lighting and angles. If taking outdoor shots, the best time is overcast so light is diffused and not harsh. People like the golden hours as well. Once you learn the basic techniques, even smartphones can produce decent results. Most of all, have fun doing it.

All these were taken with older iPhones and Galaxy phones over the years.

Thanks! All had some sort of post processing done one way or another to get the affect I wanted but all post processing was done on the smartphone.

I'm even farther north. I'm in the middle of the potato fields :) Once you get north of highway 64 it's much, much better here.(sorry to all the readers below 64, it's just more relaxed up here )

I have an old friend in Marquette. He loves it up there. Pretty sure he won't leave until he's dead. Yoopers are a different breed though.

Just got my new Samsung Galaxy Note 8 with dual cam. It provides pretty good bokeh and detail for a smartphone cam.8df942ff8ace6362c48704b79559189f_531756cc6a929fd9e35b0a81cd8d0ff0d24eaafe.jpg

    I'm trying to learn.

A few from our family vacation last week. Some taken with my Samsung Galaxy 8+, others with my Nikon D3400.

If you could only have three lens in your camera bag, what are they?

    35, 50 and 85. I could really get by with just a 35 and 50 though.

That's a place that screams for pictures. Love the detail on the engines and the shuttle. I need to get down there with my youngest. She's a huge NASA fan.

Thank you to both of you, @AxelsHumanDad that is the direction I was heading in. I just picked up the 24-70 f/2.8 (Tamaron version), and @smslavin after some research and seeing some of your urban photos recently I think a 50mm and 85mm are must haves. I guess I will have to carry 4 or make a tough decision, because I really want the 70-200 f/2.8 Nikon.

You made a tough question. Are those the three best lenses I have or want? Not really, but if I had to carry only three in one bag, those three cover the entire range from 14mm to 200mm. Zooms aren't perfect for everything, but those three I chose are definitely no slouch.
Real photographers like Sean will pick fixed focal lengths and use "foot zoom" :)
I'm just a hobbyist with deep pockets so the Trinity works as an 'overall' kit. I've got a big bag I throw in the truck, so I'm not limited to carrying just three lenses ;)

    I generally take my 24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8, 60 f/2.8, 105 f/2.8, 500 f/4 AF, 600 f/4 MF, and a 2x teleconverter. Good thing I have the big back seat of my Crewmax.
